KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team rode a hot power play and the return of sophomore goalie
Brandon Bussi to a 5-2 win over Miami in its regular season home finale on Friday night at Lawson Ice Arena.
Ronnie Attard,
Paul Washe,
Drew Worrad,
Jason Polin and
Jamie Rome all scored in the win, while freshman defenseman
Aidan Fulp had a career-high three assists. Attard and Washe each had assists for two-point nights, while Bussi made 20 saves in his first action since suffering an injury in the first game of the season.
WMU outshot MU 41-28 on the night and the power play finished 3-for-4.
After a back-and-forth opening to the game the Broncos struck first at 12:12 with Attard scoring on the power play. Fulp cycled the puck to
Josh Passolt on the right circle. The senior forward dished the puck across the ice to Attard in the left circle and the sophomore defenseman ripped it into the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season. Passolt picked up his 11th assist on the season and Fulp tallied his eighth as Western Michigan took a 1-0 lead.
The Broncos were on the power play again during the final minutes of the first period and Attard fired a shot that deflected off of Washe in front of the net and into the back of it for Washe's seventh goal of the season. Attard tallied his 12th helper and Fulp picked up his second of the night.
Jack Olmstead cut the lead in half at 3:00 into the second period. Matt Barry won a draw back to him in the WMU zone and Olmstead quickly fired it into the net for his first goal of the season.
The RedHawks tied it up at 2-2 on a short-handed goal by Casey Gilling at 12:10 in the second. Gilling stole the puck near the WMU bench and skated in on a breakaway for his fourth goal of the season.
Minutes later Worrad scored the game-winner at 16:16.
Cole Gallant fired a shot on net and MU starting goalie Ludvig Persson made the initial save but the puck squirted through his legs and was sitting in the crease. Worrad charged forward and punched the puck into the net for his fifth goal of the season. Worrad and Persson collided on the goal and Persson had to head to the locker room with an upper body injury for the remainder of the night.
Polin pushed the lead to 4-2 at 12:32 in the third period on Western Michigan's third power play goal on the night. Washe attempted to center the puck to Polin, who was charging toward the net. The puck got deflected up in the air and Polin batted it into the back of the net past reserve goalie Grant Valentine for his fifth goal of the season. Washe picked up his 11th assist of the season and Fulp picked up his third of the night and 11th on the year.
Just 61 seconds later Rome added an insurance goal.
Brett Van Os won a draw back to Cedric Fiedler and the freshman defenseman fired a shot on net. Valentine made the save but Rome slid the rebound by him for his second goal of the season, pushing the lead to 5-2.
The two teams meet for the final time to close out the regular season on Sunday at Miami. Puck drop is set for 2 p.m. and can be seen live on CBS Sports Network.
