WMU Downs Miami in Three Sets

OXFORD, Ohio – On Friday night inside Millett Hall the Western Michigan volleyball team completed a 3-0 sweep of Miami (25-16, 25-23, 25-20) to split its two matches this week. The win marked WMU's first win at Millett Hall since 2017.

Against the Redhawks the Broncos registered a .360 attack percentage with two players recording double-digit kills and senior outside hitter Rachel Bontrager and freshman Andelyn Simkins each registering double-doubles.

For the second straight night Simkins recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs to go along with a .500 attack percentage. Simkins also had one assist, two blocks and one service ace.

Bontrager earned her third double-double of the season with a team-high 15 kills and 13 digs. The Valparaiso, Ind., native also had one assist and recorded a staggering .419 attack percentage.

Behind Bontrager and Simkins, sophomore Maggie King had nine kills followed by Sammi Labolle with six kills and Janell Williams with five. Labolle ranked third on the team against Miami with a .417 attack percentage.

Freshman Logan Case led the Broncos with 40 assists while having three kills and nine digs. Case's 40 assists mark the fifth straight match in which she has recorded 40 or more assists. In the two matches against Miami Case registered 82 digs, averaging 11.71 assists per set.

The Broncos registered four service aces and out hit the Redhawks .360 to .282. WMU had four blocks to Miami's three with the Brown & Gold earning 44 assists to Miami's 40.

With the win Western Michigan improved its overall and Mid-American Conference record to 7-3. The Broncos return home for a four-match homestand beginning Feb 25-26 against MAC West foe Ball State. WMU then takes on Buffalo at home, March 4-5.

Set One (WMU – 25, Miami – 16)
The Broncos and RedHawks went back and forth in the first set being tied at 8-8 before WMU went on a 9-1 run to gain a 17-9 advantage. Miami cut into the Bronco lead and trimmed it down to six before a block by WMU propelled its lead to 21-14. Western Michigan ended the set with a kill from Simkins followed by a Miami attack error to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead in the match.

Set Two (WMU – 25, Miami – 23)
Western Michigan got off to an early lead in the second set before Miami went on an early 3-0 run to gain a 9-8 lead. Miami extended its lead to 17-11 after a 3-0 run once again before the Broncos embarked on a 9-1 run to grab a 20-18 advantage late in the second.

Late in the second set Miami recorded three straight kills to grab a 23-21 lead and force WMU to call a timeout. Trailing by two late, the Broncos rattled off five straight points with two kills from Labolle to win the second set 25-23 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set Three (WMU – 25, Miami – 20)
WMU and Miami traded points early on in the set before Western Michigan embarked on a 3-0 run to take a 15-11 lead at the midway point of the set. Out of a timeout Miami cut the Bronco lead down to 18-16 before kills from Maggie King, Rachel Bontrager and Janell Williams gave WMU a 21-18 advantage.

The Broncos ended the set and the match on Miami errors as the Redhawks registered two attack errors and a serve error to give WMU the 3-0 victory.
