Broncos Win Nail-biter at Indiana State to Secure Fourth Straight Victory

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Western Michigan women's basketball (5-2) team picked up a big victory in hostile territory on Saturday evening against the Sycamores of Indiana State (3-5) by a final score of 68-67. The win is the fourth straight for WMU, and second straight on the road.

A very well-timed 9-0 run in the fourth quarter helped propel the Broncos to victory. WMU won the first three quarters of play, and at one point held a nine-point lead late in the fourth. However, ISU had a late run of their own and cut the Western Michigan lead to just one with just 41 seconds remaining. With the Sycamores holding possession out of a timeout, redshirt senior forward Reilly Jacobson came up with a massive steal, holding onto a one-point lead and ultimately sealing the deal for WMU.

Defense shined bright again for the Broncos, with Indiana State turning it over a total of 23 times throughout the game. Persistent foul trouble created some adversity, but Western Michigan was able to overcome the obstacles that stood between them and their fifth win of the season.

Leading the way for WMU was sophomore guard Lauren Ross, tallying 25 points on 9-13 (69.2 percent) from the field and 2-4 from deep. Due to consecutive technical fouls against Indiana State, Ross scored a whopping nine points in a single possession, and 18 points in the third quarter alone. She also contributed six boards and two assists during her 35 minutes on the court.

Redshirt sophomore Taylor Williams had a big evening for the Broncos as well, posting 18 points on 6-10 shooting, while grabbing nine boards and dishing out two assists of her own. In addition to her game-clinching steal, Reilly Jacobson totaled 11 points and three rebounds in the contest. She also finished with a career-high six steals in the contest. Senior guard Maddie Watters added nine points on 3-7 shooting beyond the arc, as well as a pair of rebounds.

WMU and ISU finished dead even in the rebounding battle, each pulling down 31 misses as a team. Western Michigan created 20 points off of turnovers, scored 30 points in the paint collectively, and got an additional 10 points from second chance opportunities. The Broncos also shot 24-51 from the field, getting 47.1 percent of their looks to fall.

Next, the Broncos travel east to take on the Titans of Detroit Mercy on Wednesday, Dec. 8. Tip-off in Detroit is set for 7 p.m.
