Broncos Fall Just Short in Battle with Tenth-Ranked Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team battled incredibly hard on the road this afternoon against No. 10 Indiana, but fell short by a final score of 67-57. The loss is the first for the Broncos since Nov. 18 at USC.

The first quarter featured a great effort from redshirt senior forward Reilly Jacobson, who had the first seven points for WMU on 3-4 shooting from the field. Despite hounding defense from the Hoosiers, the Broncos trailed by just five at the end of one.

The second quarter was much of the same, as Jacobson added five more points and three boards to her team's cause for a total of 12 points at the half. Redshirt sophomore forward Taylor Williams and sophomore guard Megan Wagner each added a pair of buckets as well and the Broncos trailed the Hoosiers by just five points going into the locker room by a score of 33-27.

The difference in the game was the third quarter, which belonged to the Hoosiers, as they outscored Western Michigan 22-11 in the period. A 7-0 run to begin the second half propelled IU to a 55-38 lead with ten minutes remaining in the game. Despite a less-than-ideal third quarter, the Broncos continued to fight on both sides of the ball, and won the fourth quarter 19-12.

WMU was fueled by Taylor Williams, who posted her fourth double-double of the season with 15 points on 6-13 shooting (46.2 percent), as well as 13 rebounds. Williams was joined in double figures by Reilly Jacobson, who finished with a team-high 16 points on 7-12 from the field (58.3 percent). Jacobson also added six rebounds and three assists for the Broncos this afternoon. Rounding out the double-digit efforts was Megan Wagner, who notched 10 points on 4-10 shooting, as well as five rebounds and three assists for her squad.

The Broncos were bested on the glass against IU by a final margin of 47-29, and the Hoosiers scored over half of their points from the painted area. Second chance points were even for both sides, as each team tallied 11 points off of their own misses. The Bronco reserves did edge out the IU bench, scoring 13 to Indiana's 11. The Western Michigan bench gave their team great minutes in the game outside of scoring as well.

Defensively, WMU played very well, holding the 10th ranked Hoosiers to just 23-59 from the field (39 percent) and 2-16 (12.5 percent) from beyond the arc. The Broncos also forced 11 turnovers in the contest, and swiped the ball from IU a total of eight times.

Sunday afternoon marks the second time this season that the Broncos have been within 10 points of a Big Ten opponent, with the other coming early this season at Purdue when WMU came within eight points. It was also the first time any current member of the Broncos roster or coaching staff had taken on an opponent ranked 10th nationally or higher.

Western Michigan will be off for the holidays for 10 days before beginning their Mid-American Conference schedule on the road against the Cardinals of Ball State on Dec. 29. Tip-off in Muncie is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
