KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team (3-2) picked up an emphatic victory on Tuesday night over the visiting Olivet College Comets (1-4) by a final score of 105-29. The 76-point margin is the second largest in program history, trailing only one win from 1980 in which WMU beat Chicago State 120-37 (83 points).
Leading the way for the Broncos was sophomore guard
Gabi Saxman, who had a career evening and set a new program record for individual steals recorded in a game with 11. The previous record was 10 steals held by Shelly Klare against Notre Dame in 1984. Saxman also had a career-high 15 points, six assists, and a pair of rebounds.
As a team, the Broncos finished with 31 takeaways on 41 Comet turnovers and held their opponent to single-digit scoring in three of the game's four quarters. WMU also held Olivet to shooting percentages in the 30's for field goals and three point shots, while limiting the Comets to just four second chance points.
While defense provided a huge boost, it was a big night for Western Michigan on offense too. Sophomore guard
Lauren Ross put up 17 points on 7-12 shooting, six rebounds, and three steals. Senior guard
Maddie Watters contributed 17 points of her own, going 5-11 from beyond the arc, while also grabbing three rebounds and three steals.
Redshirt sophomore forward Taylor Williams ended her night with 12 points, four steals, and a pair of boards, while fellow forward and redshirt senior
Reilly Jacobson added 11 points, three steals, and two rebounds. Redshirt junior forward
Abby Voss and freshman center
Lauren Audino each tallied eight points against Olivet as well, with Voss snatching seven board and Audino pulling down six.
The Broncos never trailed in the route, and lead their opponent in nearly every statistical category, including the rebounding battle, showing WMU pulling down 38 rebounds in the contest. Additionally, Western Michigan scored 57 of their 105 points off of Comet turnovers, earned 62 points in the paint as a unit, and also dished out a season-high 30 assists.
WMU recorded 21 points off of their own misses, and got out in transition for 32 points as well. The reserves also outscored Olivet as a team tonight by a 59-29 margin. From the field, the Broncos shot 42-76 (55.3 percent) over four quarters, and knocked down a season-high 10 of their 26 shots from deep (38.5 percent). Western Michigan was also red hot from the charity stripe, burying 11 of their 12 attempts (91.7 percent).
Balance was a huge aspect of tonight's win for WMU, not only in terms of scoring, but also rebounds, assists, and steals. Five Broncos finished with double-figure scoring with no one member of the team playing more than 25 minutes. Furthermore, six Western Michigan players finished with at least three steals, and three Broncos tallied six or more rebounds.
Following a brief Thanksgiving break, Western Michigan returns to campus to host the Beacons of Valparaiso on Monday, Nov. 29. Tip-off inside University Arena is set for 7 p.m. and will be available for streaming via ESPN3/ESPN+. For all ticketing information, please visit wmubroncos.com/tickets.
