MUNCIE, Ind. – Western Michigan head coach
Colleen Munson became the winningest coach in the history of the WMU volleyball program on Sunday as the fourth-seeded Broncos knocked off fifth-seed Toledo 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-19) in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Championship on Sunday. With Sunday's victory, WMU advances to face top seed Ball State on Monday at 4:30 pm in the semifinals.
Munson's victory was her 332nd at the helm of Western Michigan. In her 17 seasons with the Broncos, Munson is 332-206 (.617). Sunday's win broke a tie with Rob Buck, who steered WMU to a 331-179 mark between 1978-93.
The Broncos (19-11) hit .285 in the contest, with
Julia Marr and
Meredith Phillips leading the way with 15 kills apiece and hitting .433 and .429, respectively. For Marr, it was her sixth straight match with double-digit kills.
Logan Case dished out a match-high 47 assists, while
Andelyn Simkins post a match-high 26 digs. The 26 digs were a new career high for Simkins.
Eight of the first 11 points of the contest went to Western Michigan. Toledo (19-12) answered with a run of its own to tie it up, 11-11. With the frame even at 16-16, the Broncos used a 5-1 surge to open up a 21-17 edge, which proved to be the difference as WMU grabbed the first set, 25-20.
Four in a row by the Broncos broke an early 5-5 deadlock and gave Western Michigan a 9-5 advantage in the second set. With WMU ahead 16-12, the Broncos put together a 5-2 stretch to extend the margin out to 21-14. The Rockets got no closer than six the rest of the set, and the Broncos took a 2-0 lead into the break.
Even at 5-5 in the third set, Western Michigan used an 8-3 surge to move out in front, 13-8. With WMU on top 14-9, the Rockets tallied four straight points to draw within one, 14-13. At 15-14, the Broncos ripped off four of the next five to put some distance between the two teams again, 19-15. Toledo got back to within two a couple times, but Western Michigan held them off to book its place in the semifinal round.
With the win, Western Michigan advances to Monday's semifinal round where it will take on regular season champion and tournament host, Ball State. The Broncos and Cardinals are set to meet at 4:30 pm on
ESPN+.
