LOS ANGELES, Cali. – Western Michigan women's basketball suffered a loss on the road this evening to the Trojans of USC by a final score of 80-50 from the Galen Center.
Sophomore guard
Lauren Ross led the Broncos in scoring with 13 points on 5-11 shooting and 3-7 from three-point range, while also adding a trio of boards. Redshirt senior forward
Reilly Jacobson added 11 points and three rebounds of her own in the game. Redshirt sophomore forward Taylor Williams also contributed seven points and an additional three rebounds for her team.
The Broncos got off to a hot start, holding a 21-13 edge after the game's opening 10 minutes. The strong first quarter was fueled by 9 points from Ross, who was a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc in the quarter. Jacobson also offered six points in the first for WMU.
The second quarter belonged to the Trojans, where they outscored the Broncos 19-4 and held WMU to just 1-13 shooting from the field. As a result, USC took a 32-25 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Ross led WMU in the first half with nine points and three rebounds, while Jacobson added eight points and three rebounds as well.
Despite a competitive third quarter, the Trojan defense held Western Michigan to just four points in the fourth, while going on various runs themselves, and managed to pull away from WMU as the final quarter of play winded down. Foul trouble became a problem as well, as four Broncos tallied three or more fouls in the contest.
For the game, Western Michigan shot just 18-59 (30.5 percent) from the field and (8-29) 27.6 percent from three-point territory. WMU also gave the ball up 13 times throughout the course of play. The Broncos did manage to swipe the ball from USC eight times in the game, with three different members of the team each tallying a pair of steals.
While USC committed 22 turnovers in the contest, the Trojans knocked down 27 of their 50 scoring attempts (54 percent), and connected on 54.5 percent of their shots from deep, going 6-11 as a team. Southern California also shot 16 more free throws than the Broncos, going 20-26 (76.9 percent) from the line.
The Trojans set up shop down low tonight as well, pulling down 48 rebounds to Western Michigan's 17 and outscoring the Broncos 38-18 in the paint. The game was much closer than the final score reflects, as USC ended the game on an 8-0 run and outscored WMU 21-4 in the fourth quarter.
The Broncos look to bounce back on Saturday, once again in enemy territory, against the Gaels of Saint Mary's College. Tip-off in Moraga at the UCU Pavilion is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET.
