Second Period Woes Doom Broncos at No. 14 Denver

DENVER, Colo. -- The Western Michigan hockey team suffered its first sweep of the season, falling at No. 14 Denver, 5-2, at Magness Arena on Saturday night.  

The Broncos (6-4-0, 1-3-0 NCHC) gave up four goals in the second period after entering the period with a 2-1 lead. 

WMU picked up goals from Max Sasson and Drew Worrad but finished the night getting outshot 32-27.  

Sasson gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead with a goal at 9:36 in the first period. Josh Passolt had the puck in the corner and went behind the net, then centering it to Sasson for his first collegiate goal. Passolt tallied his fourth assist of the season, while Worrad picked up his team-leading 12th.  

Carter Mazur redirected a shot by Mike Benning just over a minute later to tie it up at 1-1.  

Worrad then gave Western Michigan the lead on a power play goal at 17:32. Worrad walked the puck into the right circle and fired a shot into the top-left corner of the net for his second of the weekend and fourth of the season. Michael Joyaux tallied his eighth assist of the year, while Ethen Frank picked up his sixth.  

Bobby Brink scored on the power play at 6:55 in the second period to tie it up at 2-2. After some back and forth hockey, Carter Savoie scored two goals in the span of 20 seconds at 16:17 and 16:37 to give the Pioneers a 4-2 lead. Cameron Wright then netted his second goal of the weekend with less than a second remaining in the period.  

WMU finished the night 1-for-5 on the power play, while holding DU to just one power play goal on six chances.
