KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Four Broncos tallied double-digit kills and the Western Michigan volleyball team finished with a hitting percentage of .312 as it downed Akron, 3-1 (25-27, 26-24, 25-14, 25-19), at University Arena on Friday night.
Julia Marr had a team-high 19 kills to go with a .390 hitting percentage, Maggie King had 14 kills, while Meredith Phillips and Kennedy Hogan each had 11 kills. Hogan finished with a .526 hitting percentage, with Phillips recording 13 digs for a double-double. Logan Case had 55 assists and 13 digs in the win.
Neither team led by more than three in the opening set. The Broncos led the majority of the set but the tide shifted late. WMU had a 21-18 lead but Akron responded with three straight points to tie it up at 21-21. Madison Merz gave the lead back to Western Michigan with a kill but three-straight kills by the Zips had them sitting at set point. Akron's Faith Johnson had three straight attack errors to give the lead back to WMU at 25-24 but Megan Kelly tied it up with a kill and Alexis Adleta gave the set to the Zips with back-to-back kills.
The second set was even tighter, with no team leading by more than two. The set featured 14 ties, including six from the 18-18 mark. The two teams traded points with a kill by Marr tying it back up at 24-24. Merz recorded a kill to give the Broncos set point at 26-25 and Marr finished it off.
With the match tied up at 1-1 the Broncos cruised to a win in the third set. WMU built an early 10-6 lead and the closes the Zips would get form there was when they briefly cut it to 10-7 and then to 15-12. Marr recorded a kill that sparked a 10-2 run that finished off the set.
The fourth set started off tight with the teams battling to a 12-12 tie. A kill by Marr sparked a 4-0 run to give the Broncos some separation. WMU maintained its lead by keeping Akron from scoring back-to-back points for the rest of the set, pulling it out 25-19.
