Melaragni Heads in Double-OT Game-Winner Against Oakland

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's soccer team earned a dramatic 1-0 win in double overtime against Oakland at the WMU Soccer Complex on Wednesday.

Early into the second overtime WMU (3-4-4) earned a corner kick and junior defender Daniel Nimick served the ball into the box and senior forward Mike Melaragni headed it into the net in the 102nd minute for the game's only goal.

Western Michigan shot the ball 11 times, with five shots coming from junior midfielder Charlie Sharp. Melaragni, as well as fifth-year defender Matheus Lima, both added two shots a piece for their team. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Isaac Walker made three saves to earn the clean sheet.

"I thought we had the run of the play today," said head coach Chad Wiseman. "We seemed to get stronger as the game went on. We really wanted the win today and our commitment throughout the match showed that."

Oakland tallied just four total shots in the contest, three of which coming from redshirt senior midfielder Noah Jensen. Jensen was one of seven Golden Grizzlies to log the full 101 minutes in the game. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Finn Jurak recorded five saves on the evening.

"I thought defensively we were really solid," Wiseman added. "Aidan O'Connor had a fantastic match in his center back position. He won balls, was clean with his pases and didn't let players in behind him."

"Overall I'm proud of the guys to find the game-winning goal in overtime. We have been in plenty of overtime games this year and haven't been able to push on and be the team to find the game-winner. Today we did and for our captain Big Mike to score it was exactly what we needed."

The Broncos are back in action next Wednesday, Oct. 13, where they will host Michigan State. Kick-off at the WMU Soccer Complex is scheduled for 4 p.m. The event will be available for streaming via ESPN3/ESPN+.
