Broncos Sweep Colgate After OT Winner

HAMILTON, N.Y. – After winning in an 11-goal thriller on Friday night, the 11th-ranked Western Michigan Hockey team responded with a three-goal thriller on Saturday night in a 2-1 overtime win at Colgate.

Brandon Bussi made his 18th save of the night just seconds into overtime and the puck got punched out into the circle. Ethen Frank won the race to it and a two-on-zero rush with Ronnie Attard. Frank passed it to Attard on the right and then last night's hero dished it back to Frank for the tap-in goal and game-winner just 24 seconds into overtime.

WMU (5-1-0) trailed 1-0 going into the third period but tied it up on Paul Washe's second goal of the weekend with 11:28 remaining in the third period. Michael Joyaux fired a shot from the right point and it deflected off of Jason Polin and on net. Mitch Benson made the save, one of his 38 on the night, but Washe was there to punch in the rebound.

The teams skated to a 0-0 tie in the first period and were headed for the same in the second period until Alex Young took advantage of a turnover by Bussi behind the net. Colton Young, his older brother, forced the turnover and found Alex in the right circle. Bussi scrambled to get back into place but was unable to get set before Young fired it into the net, giving Colgate a 1-0 lead.

For the second straight night the Broncos had a sizable advantage in shots on goal with 40 to the Raiders' 19. Both teams went scoreless on the power play with WMU going 0-for-5 but having its penalty kill rebound to stop Colgate on all six of its chances.

Western Michigan heads back to Kalamazoo to open National Collegiate Hockey Association play next Friday and Saturday, hosting No. 4 Minnesota-Duluth. Puck drop is 7:05 p.m. on both nights with tickets on-sale now at www.wmubroncos.com/tickets or by calling 1-888-4-WMUTIX.
