KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team wrapped up its season on a high note with a 6-0 win over Northern Illinois at the WMU Soccer Complex on Thursday afternoon.
In her final game as a Bronco, senior Hannah Redoute had a career-high five points on two goals and an assist. WMU also picked up goals from Jenna Blackburn, Cas Flanagan, Claudia Schilling and Bailey Korhorn. Senior goalkeeper Maggie Rogers made three saves to earn a shutout in her final career game.
"We ended the season on an extremely positive note," said head coach Sammy Boateng. "We defended well when we need to and attacked with pace and creativity. I'm really proud of the way we executed as a group as we had five different goal scorers. We were very composed in the back, our midfielders connected well and our front four finished their opportunities."
The Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute on a goal by Blackburn. Senior defender Kai Sugiyama played a long ball that Blackburn settled just at the top of the box before turning and firing it into the lower-left corner of the net.
Redoute netted her first of her two goals in the 35th minute, finishing off a cross from Flanagan to push the lead to 2-0. The duo combined again in the 43rd minute, this time with Flanagan finishing off a cross from Redoute.
Western Michigan added to its lead early in the second period when Schilling kicked in a cross from Mary Dzuiba from just in front of the goal to make it 4-0.
Redoute added her second of the night in the 76th minute, heading in a corner kick by Jorden Campbell to push the lead to 5-0.
Korhorn, also in her final game, capped off the goal-fest with her eighth goal of the season. Campbell found her in the box and Korhorn posted up to gain control of the ball, turning and firing it into the net to put the nail in the coffin at 6-0.
"Our seniors finished their careers on a high note and I'm extremely happy for them," Boateng added. "I want to congratulate all the seniors and their families on their careers here at Western Michigan."
