KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The 17th-ranked Western Michigan hockey team fell in an overtime heartbreaker to No. 1 Michigan, 3-2, at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday.
Nick Blankenburg scored from the top of the right circle with 2:38 remaining in the overtime period to give the Wolverines the win.
The game was tied late in the third period when Michael Joyaux fired a shot from the right point and Ethen Frank deflected it into the net but the goal was overturned after review because it was ruled that Frank touched it with a high stick.
Michigan jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a power play goal by Brendan Brisson at 13:22 in the first period on a shot from the right circle. Nolan Moyle pushed the lead to 2-0 after punching in a rebound on a shot by Garret Van Wyhe at 4:56 in the second period.
During a Wolverine power play Frank had a short-handed breakaway but was hooked going to the net and award a penalty shot, but the shot was stopped by Michigan goalie Erik Portillo.
Minutes later Frank found the back of the net, scoring from the left circle on the power play after a shot by Joyaux was blocked and bounced to Frank. Drew Worrad also picked up an assist on the goal, his sixth of the season.
WMU tied it up with 5.7 seconds left to play in the second on a goal by Worrad. The Broncos had a 4-on-3 power play and Worrad threw a shot toward the net from the right circle and it deflected off of a Wolverine and into the net. Joyaux picked up his sixth assist of the season on the goal and Paul Washe tallied his second.
The Broncos outshot the Wolverines 35-30 on the night and finished 2-for-5 on the power play, while holding Michigan to one power play goal on five chances.
