Broncos Head to Toledo for Pivotal MAC Contest

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan football team will travel to the Glass Bowl on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 3:30 to take on Toledo in a Mid-American Conference Western Division matchup. The Broncos are 5-2 overall with a 2-1 MAC record, while Toledo is 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the MAC.

BRONCOS vs. ROCKETS
  • This is the 76th meeting between Western Michigan and the University of Toledo. The series dates back to 1939, and the two institutions have met every year since 1950.
  • WMU is 31-44-0 all-time against the Rockets.
  • Since 2015, the series is tied at 3-3, and WMU head coach Tim Lester is 1-3 all-time against Toledo.
 
SCOUTING TOLEDO (3-4, 1-2 MAC West)
  • The Rockets went 2-2 in non-conference play with wins over Norfolk State (49-10) and UMass (45-7), and losses to No. 7 Notre Dame (32-29) and Colorado State (22-6).
  • Toledo enters this Saturday's game vs. Western Michigan needing a win to stay in the race for the West Division crown of the Mid-American Conference. The Rockets have lost their two MAC games by a combined five points the last two weeks.
  • Toledo is coming off a 26-23 overtime setback at Central Michigan last week. Redshirt freshman quarterback Dequan Finn nearly rallied Toledo from a 17-point second-half deficit, but the Rockets came up just short.
 
THE LAST MEETING
  • In one of the all-time classic MAC games, Western Michigan capped an incredible comeback with a fake-spike touchdown from Kaleb Eleby to Jaylen Hall with 17 seconds left to come away with a 41-38 win over the Rockets in Kalamazoo on Nov. 12, 2020.
  • Trailing by 10 with 2:54 remaining, the Broncos embarked on an 11-play, 70-yard drive that ended with Eleby registering his second rushing touchdown of the night from one-yard away. After missing the extra point, the Broncos trailed 38-34 with 45 seconds remaining.
  • Senior kicker Thiago Kapps executed a perfect onside kick up the middle that was recovered by Nick Mihalic at the WMU 49. Pass completions of 11, 13 and 18 yards by Eleby then set up the game-winning trick play.
 
ELECTRIC ELEBY
  • To this point in the season, WMU quarterback Kaleb Eleby leads the MAC in passing efficiency, touchdowns, yards, and points responsible for.
  • He was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week after his 15-of-22, 307 yard, and 4 total touchdown performance against Kent State last weekend.
  • Eleby was added to the Davey O'Brien watch list this week.
  • At the end of last season, he led the nation in yards per pass attempt, and led the conference in passing touchdowns and yards per completion.
 
ALWAYS WANTING MOORE
  • Sophomore wide receiver Skyy Moore is sixth in the nation with 8.2 receptions per game, and has put up some video game numbers this season. He posted a career-high 163 yards and two touchdowns against Buffalo on Oct. 2.
  • Moore leads the MAC in receptions (49), yards per game (105.7), and total yards (634), despite missing the Illinois State game.

LIVING IN THE MOMENT
  • Redshirt Junior linebacker Corvin Moment leads the MAC in tackles for loss (9.5), and has been one of the most consistent performers on the WMU defense.
  • In addition to his TFLs, Moment has totaled a team-high 42 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and has forced three fumbles.
 
BACK WITH A VENGEANCE
  • Senior linebacker A.J. Thomas missed four games due to injury this season, and since his return he has been a man possessed.
  • In his two games back, he totaled nine solo tackles against Ball State, and finished with three tackles, a pass breakup and a sack against Kent State.
  • In the season opener, he had 10 total tackles at Michigan.
