Broncos Fall to Golden Flashes in Overtime

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team fell to Kent State, 3-2, in overtime at the WMU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

WMU (3-10-0, 1-5-0 MAC) took an early lead off of an unassisted goal from senior forward Morgan Otteson in the 45th minute of play. The Golden Flashes responded 10 minutes later, when sophomore defender Dalaney Ranallo found the back of the net off a corner kick from redshirt senior defender Karly Hellstrom. Hellstrom assisted on each of Kent State's three goals on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Flashes struck again in the 85th minute, this time coming from the boot of redshirt senior forward Cameron Shedenhelm. The Broncos were quick to even the score, however, as freshman midfielder Mary Dziuba swerved the defense and sent a ball past the KSU keeper for the unassisted goal just one minute later.

The deciding factor in Sunday's contest came in the 94th minute of play off of a Kent State corner kick. After being batted around, Karly Hellstrom sent the ball to her teammate, sophomore midfielder Callie Cunningham, to secure the game for the Golden Flashes.

The Broncos sent in 16 shots throughout the game, four of which came from Morgan Otteson. Senior forward Bailey Korhorn added three shots as well. Dziuba added an additional three shots, with two landing on goal.

Bronco senior goalkeeper Maggie Rogers finished the day with one save, and KSU junior goalkeeper Sarah Melen tallied a total of eight saves.

The WMU women's soccer team returns to play this Thursday, where they will travel to Buffalo for a showdown with the Bulls, before returning home on Sunday to take on Akron. The contest at home on Sunday is also Bronco women's soccer Alumni and Family Weekend. Kick-off in Buffalo is scheduled for 7 p.m.
