WMU Drops Home Contest to Bowling Green

KALAMAZOO , Mich.  – In its first Mid-American Conference home game of the season the Western Michigan women's basketball fell to Bowling Green, 73-48 on Wednesday afternoon inside University Arena.

The Broncos had two players score in double figures against the Falcons with redshirt senior Reilly Jacobson leading the way with 16 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field. It's the fourth game this season in which Jacobson has led the Broncos in scoring. The redshirt senior forward also had one assist, two blocks and a career-high four steals.

Behind Jacobson was redshirt freshman Taylor Williams with 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field. Williams also led the Broncos with eight rebounds, including three on the offensive glass. It's the fourth game this season in which Williams has led the team in rebounds.

Off the bench WMU was led by sophomore Ashley Konkle with eight points, one shy of her career-high. Konkle was 3-of-4 from the field and knocked down two three-pointers to go along with six rebounds in 16 minutes of action.

Redshirt junior Kia Brooks recorded her best game of the season, matching her career-high with five points. Brooks scored all five of her points in the fourth quarter, knocking down one three while going 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. Brooks also earned two rebounds in 17 minutes.

As a team the Broncos shot just 34 percent from the field and was 4-of-19 from behind the three-point line. WMU was narrowly outrebounded by BGSU 35-38 with the Falcons holding a 12-6 advantage on the offensive glass. The Broncos forced BGSU to commit 15 turnovers on Wednesday afternoon, scoring 13 points off of BGSU turnovers.

Western Michigan now has an overall record of 1-5 and is 0-4 in conference play. The Broncos will look to snap their five-game losing streak on Saturday, Jan. 9 at home against in-state foe Eastern Michigan. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. inside University Arena.

It was a slow start for the Broncos in the first quarter as BGSU made six of their first eight field goals to take a 15-2 lead with 5:40 remaining. The early Falcon lead was highlighted by a 12-0 run while WMU went just 1-of-6 from the field.

It was ultimately a 16-2 run to give BGSU a 19-4 advantage with two minutes to play in the first quarter. The Broncos rallied back and cut their deficit down to 11 to trail 23-12 at the end of the first quarter. To begin the second quarter

To begin the second, the two programs traded baskets before WMU went on a 5-0 run to cut its deficit down to single digits. Jacobson knocked down a three-pointer to cut the deficit down to 10 before redshirt freshman Taylor Williams collected a steal
and went coast-to-coast to slim the BGSU lead to 27-19 with 4:41 left.

During the final 4:41 of the second quarter, WMU and BGSU combined to score just four points as BGSU held a 29-21 lead at halftime. The Broncos had seven turnovers in the final four minutes while the Falcons has six turnovers in the final six minutes and made just one of their final nine field goals.

In the third quarter Bowling Green outscored Western Michigan, 25-9 and raced out of the gate with a 16-5 run through the first five minutes of play. During the final four minutes of the third the Broncos rallied back, making two of their final four field goals
as WMU trailed 54-30 heading into the fourth.

The fourth quarter saw Bowling Green earn its largest lead of the game at 29 as WMU shot 38.5 percent from the field and was 6-of-8 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Reilly Jacobson was dominant for the Brown & Gold in the fourth quarter scoring four points with three rebounds. Jacobson was also 3-of-4 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
