KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan track and field team is back in action for the first time since March of 2020, heading to Central Michigan University to open the 2021 Indoor Season on Saturday.
 
The last time the team had competed was at the 2020 Indoor Mid-American Conference Championship before the outdoor season was postponed due to COVID-19.
 
"We are excited and grateful to get the season started," said second-year head coach Makiba Batten. "This past year has challenged us all mentally and physically, but we have made it through. Even though our numbers are down this year we have a group of tough young women who won't give up and continue to roll with the constant changes. As I have said before, during cross country season, we will never forget what it was like during these times and will come out stronger than before. Buck up Broncos! Let's ride!"
 
The Broncos did see some action last week in their annual intrasquad meet. WMU announced its captains for the season with seniors Brittney Hall, Rebecca McNamee, Taylor Eaton and Juliane Sormain selected to lead the team.
 
Saturday's dual meet with the Chippewas is one of six meets on the schedule for the indoor season. The Broncos will also compete in the Grand Valley State Mike Lints Alumni Open on Jan. 23 and then the 17th annual Akron Invitational on Feb. 5-6. WMU returns to GVSU for the annual Big Meet on Feb. 12-13. Western Michigan then returns to Central Michigan for the Indoor MAC Championships on Feb. 26-27.
