KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- In response to a $76 million budget reduction at Western Michigan University, and a review of overall operations, Lawson Ice Arena and Gabel Natatorium have been transferred to the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics.   The Athletic Department continues to support an NCAA Division I men's ice hockey program as a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.

During the review, it was determined the pool would require significant repairs to remain operational.  While there is limited revenue generated through community use of the pool, operating costs and needed repairs far exceeded any revenue projections.  Given the athletic department and institutional budget situation, the recommendation was to close the pool.   

Understanding that additional pool options are developing in the Kalamazoo community, we are hopeful area swimming and diving enthusiasts are able to meet their needs.
