WMU Wraps Up Weekend Series at No.3 Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Western Michigan baseball team wrapped up its three-game series against No.3 Louisville on Sunday afternoon with a 16-0 loss inside Jim Patterson Stadium.

The Broncos will take tomorrow off for travel before playing five games in six days in Port Charlotte, Fla. at the Snowbird Classic, March 3-8. While in the Sunshine State WMU will square off with Villanova, Northeastern, Army, Iowa and St. Bonaventure.

In the series finale the Broncos were held to three hits against one of the nation's premier pitching staffs. The junior trio of Connor Charping, Logan Hudson and Sean O'Keefe each notched a hit on Sunday against the Cardinals.

At the top of the line-up Charping went 1-for-3 at the plate and is now hitting .312 this season. With a single up the middle in the top of the sixth inning Charping extended his reached base streak to 10 straight games.

Junior Logan Hudson continues to swing a hot bat going 1-for-4 against Louisville and leads the team through 10 games this season with a .342 batting average. The Caledonia, Mich., native has now registered a hit in six of the last seven games.

Fellow junior Sean O'Keefe earned his second hit of the series after going 1-for-3 in the seven spot in the line-up. O'Keefe raised his batting average to .237 on the season with 10 RBIs and 11 runs scored. The junior infielder has recorded a hit in four of the last five contests.

On the mound the Broncos were led by sophomore LHP Dane Armbrustmacher who threw 2.2 innings in relief, allowing just two earned runs on six hits with one strikeout. Redshirt senior RHP Will Mullen along with junior RHP Brendan Lovell also earned one strikeout in the series finale.

For the weekend the Broncos scored three runs on 12 hits with four Broncos multi hits over the weekend. WMU also drew seven walks while stealing four bases. Leading the way offensively was Logan Hudson with a .273 batting average to go along with a triple and an RBI. Behind Hudson was Charping at .250 with one run scored.

Junior Blake Dunn against the Cardinals scored one run and registered one RBI while stealing a team-high three bases. Justin McIntyre over the weekend had one home run, one RBI and one run scored while registering a .364 slugging percentage.

On the mound the Bronco pitching staff recorded 16 strikeouts and allowed just 14 walks in 24 innings. RHP Jack Huisman led the Broncos with five strikeouts in three innings pitched followed by sophomore RHP Brady Miller with four.

Louisville got off to a fast start scoring four runs in the first off of three hits to gain a 4-0 lead after one inning of play. The Cardinals scored in every inning but the second highlighted by five runs in the third and three runs in the seventh for the victory.

Western Michigan looked to get on the board in the top of the second as Hudson singled back up the middle for the Broncos first hit of the afternoon. After back-to-back fly outs, O'Keefe rocketed a single to center field to give WMU runners on the corners with two outs. The scoring threat was halted a batter later as a fly out to third base ended the scoring chance.

The Broncos put runners on base in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings as Charping recorded a single in the top of the sixth followed by a walk from freshman Greg Budig in the seventh and a walk from junior Justin McIntyre in the ninth.
