OXFORD, Ohio - The Western Michigan women's basketball team dropped a second consecutive Mid-American Conference road contest on Monday, Feb. 3, at the Miami University, falling 67-70 to the RedHawks.
The Broncos shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the field and led at the line with 12-of-18 (66.7 percent) shooting. The Hawks held the advantage from long range, going 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) and earning 21 points off WMU turnovers. Despite outrebounding their opponents 41-35, the Brown & Gold struggled early with turnovers, finishing the contest with 19 total.
Jordan Walker led the squad with 24 points, adding seven rebounds and three assists and going 3-for-7 from beyond the arc. WMU poured in 13 points off the bench, including a nine-point performance by
Maddie Watters as she shot 3-for-6 from three-point range.
Senior forward
Breanna Mobley had a strong showing for Western Michigan, totaling 22 points with 14 rebounds. After surpassing 1,000 rebounds in the last contest, she racked up a quick 14 in back-to-back games to tie for the all-time career rebounding record of 1,028, originally set by Pat Charity ('78).
Both teams struggled on offense in the opening quarter, tallying just 20 total points. Down 9-11 heading into the second, WMU began to find their footing with 12 points in the paint and 3-for-3 free throw shooting. Miami outlasted the Broncos from three-point range however, sinking a trio of threes to head back into the locker room with a 31-23 advantage.
Western Michigan went on to narrowly outscore the RedHawks in the final two quarters. The home team started out the second half with a 4-0 scoring run. Then
Leighah-Amori Wool nailed her first three of the game, quickly followed up by back-to-back threes from Walker and a pair of baskets from Mobley to draw a Miami timeout with the Broncos trailing by ten. Watters sunk her second three-pointer, followed up by a buzzer-beating layup from Mobley to finalize a 9-0 run and put Western Michigan within five points of their opponent heading into the final frame.
The Broncos pushed hard to win back a fighting chance in the contest, resulting in a back-and-forth final quarter that saw six lead changes. Their largest lead was a slim one as WMU went ahead for the first time at 7:15, thanks to a long-range shot from Watters to cap off a 7-0 run. With just over four minutes left in the game, Miami took over with a 7-0 scoring run of their own. Despite a comeback chance after a jumper from Mobley with seconds to go, the RedHawks added a pair of free throws in the final seconds to seal the win. Mobley scored ten points in the fourth quarter alone.
Western Michigan, now 11-9 overall and 4-5 in the conference, returns to familiar ground this weekend, hosting Eastern Michigan on Feb. 8 for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
