Hockey Falls in OT at No. 3/1 North Dakota

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Western Michigan hockey team fell in a heartbreaker in overtime at No. 3/1 North Dakota, 2-1, on Saturday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

WMU's Rhett Kingston scored a goal early on in overtime but it was reviewed and overturned after goalie interference was called. Less than a minute later Shane Pinto scored on a rebound off a shot by Matt Kiersted to win it for the Fighting Hawks.

Senior goalie Ben Blacker made 17 saves on the night in his second start of the season.

Collin Adams gave North Dakota an early 1-0 lead with a goal at 4:41 in the first period. Adams got the puck at the bottom of the left circle and scored on a sharp-angle shot for his 12th goal of the season.

After a player on each team was issued a penalty creating some 4-on-4 hockey, Wade Allison fired a shot toward the net and junior forward Paul Washe slashed through the slot and tipped it into the goal for his 11th of the season at 17:01 in the first. Allison tallied his 11th assist of the year, while freshman defenseman Ronnie Attard picked up his seventh.

Neither team took advantage in the second or the third periods. UND outshot WMU 7-5 in the second and 4-3 in the third. Overall the Broncos were held to 16 shots on goal.

Western Michigan returns to Lawson Ice Arena to close out the regular season hosting Miami on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come early to Saturday's game to celebrate WMU's senior class. Tickets for both games are available at www.wmubroncos.com/tickets.
