VESTAL, N.Y. - Western Michigan men's tennis won its sixth straight Mid-American Conference opener on Friday afternoon, defeating Binghamton 7-0. The Broncos have now been victorious in their last five matches against the Bearcats, dating back to April 2016.
WMU won both doubles matches that finished on the court to take the early 1-0 advantage over Binghamton. Senior
Jannik Opitz earned his 100th career doubles win in the process, defeating Alejandro Pena and Kushaan Nath by a 6-3 score with his partner, sophomore
Peter Kuszynski.
The Broncos impressed in singles action, sweeping all six contests, with four of those victories coming in straight sets. Kuszynski, along with freshmen
Arjun Honnappa and
Rodrigo Crespo, all extended their singles winning streaks to five. Senior
Kennosuke Nouchi secured the win for the Broncos at No. 3 singles, beating Pena 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore
Jack Randall improved to 8-5 on the year with a straight set victory over Dylan Friedman in No. 4 singles. Opitz defeated Michael Pawlowicz and is only one more win away from reaching 200 overall victories in his career.
With the result, the Broncos have recorded double-digit wins in 26 consecutive seasons.
Western Michigan will close out its road trip with a non-conference contest against Yale on Sunday at 11 a.m.
