Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team won its second consecutive match on Saturday morning, shutting out Northern Iowa at the West Hills Athletic Club.
"I thought we came out and played a good match today," said head coach
Ryan Tomlinson. "I was proud of the way we handled things being a little short handed and our depth and ability to play anyone at different spots in the lineup really helped us out there."
At No. 1 doubles, sophomore
Femke Tjon-A-Joe and junior
Jeryn Jack teamed up to defeat Emma Carr and Kim Zizek 6-0. Freshman
Lindsey Zieglar and sophomore
Taylor Smith were victorious at No. 3 doubles, giving their team the 1-0 advantage in the process. It was the first doubles match for Smith during the 2020 dual season.Â
The Broncos won all six singles matches against the Panthers, with five of those wins coming in straight sets. Tjon-A-Joe and sophomore
Kaitlyn Rogosch earned convincing victories to put WMU up by a 3-0 score. Zieglar secured the victory for the Broncos with her fifth consecutive singles win, beating Emma Carr in straight sets (6-1, 6-4). Sophomore
Elizabeth Trupp saw her first action of the season, picking up a 6-1, 6-4 win over Valentina Caro. Jack improved to 2-1 on the year, defeating Thaissa Moreira at No. 5 singles. No. 3 singles was the last contest to finish on the court, with junior
Valerie Riegraf prevailing in a third set tie-breaker 10-5.Â
"Taylor played great in doubles with Lindsey, which is a brand new team," Tomlinson remarked. "Elizabeth did a great job in singles for us as well."
Western Michigan will now host Chicago State on Thursday and Marquette on the following Sunday, with both matches starting at 1 p.m. "We will get back to work in preparation for our upcoming home matches next week," concluded Tomlinson.Â
