OXFORD, Ohio – The Western Michigan hockey team battled National Collegiate Hockey rival Miami to a 2-2 tie and then fell in the 3-on-3 overtime to settle for one point in the standings on Friday night.
The Broncos (14-10-5) had a two-goal lead midway through the second period, but allowed power play goals in the final minute of the second period and just 1:24 into the third period to squander the lead. Neither team took advantage of the first overtime, with WMU outshooting MU 3-2 in the extra period. Gordie Green scored just 19 seconds into the 3-on-3 overtime to give the RedHawks the extra point.
Hugh McGing scored his eighth goal of the season just 1:21 into the first period to give Western Michigan an early 1-0 lead. Ronnie Attard broke up possession in the neutral zone, sliding the puck to McGing. McGing and Cole Gallant played the give-and-go, with McGing skating into the slot and ripping a shot past Ryan Larkin. Gallant picked up his 14th assist of the season on the goal and Attard his fifth.
WMU took a 1-0 lead into the second period and struck again, this time at 13:36. Attard gave the puck to Austin Rueschhoff and he skated toward the net, passing it to Mattias Samuelsson on the right side of the net for the one-timer. Larkin got a piece of it, but it bounced into the back of the net as the Broncos pushed the lead to 2-0.
The RedHawks fought back with the first of two straight power play goals at 19:00 in the second. Derek Daschke fired a shot on net from the right point and Matt Barry banged in the rebound from right next to the crease to cut the lead to 2-1.
An early penalty was called on WMU after the start of the third period and Daschke shot from the deep slot and the puck made its way through traffic and into the net to tie it up at 2-2.
Freshman goalie Brandon Bussi made 10 of his game-high 28 saves in the third period.
The two teams battle it out again on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. with coverage provided by NCHC.tv and the Bronco Radio Network.
