LAST TIME OUT
The Western Michigan women's basketball team dropped a Mid-American Conference matchup 83-79 to Eastern Michigan University last Saturday (February 8) at home.
During the setback, redshirt senior
Breanna Mobley tallied 10 rebounds to set a new Western Michigan rebounding record. Her 1,029th rebound to break the record came from a grab in the first minute of the game. Mobley now holds the rebounding record for both men's and women's basketball, and is the second-ever Bronco to have scored 1,000 points with 1,000 rebounds in her career, alongside WMU Hall of Fame legend Pat Charity. Mobley finished the contest with a game-high 22 points, earning her first double-double since January against Central Michigan.
Jordan Walker had a strong showing for the Broncos, converting a season-high four of eight three pointers to total 21 points. She added three rebounds, two assists, and two steals to the final scoresheet. With 11 points and 10 rebounds, junior
Leighah-Amori Wool tallied her second career double-double and first of the season, shooting 5-for-7 at the free throw line and 8-of-13 from field goal range.
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS
The Broncos finished the nonconference portion of their season with an 8-4 mark, including four wins on the road. Western Michigan heads into Saturday's contest with a 4-6 record in conference play, averaging 70.8 points per game and 39.5 rebounds. The squad is led by
Jordan Walker and
Breanna Mobley. Walker has led the team in scoring this season with 15.4 points per game, while Mobley averages a double-double with 13.7 points and 11.0 rebounds. Walker is one of only three players in the conference to rank in the top 20 of scoring, rebounding, assists and steals.
SERIES HISTORY
The matchup between the Buffalo Bulls and Western Michigan has the opponent leading by a narrow 14-11 record. Buffalo has won seven of the last ten contests against the Broncos, including two victories during the Mid-American Conference tournament and last year at home. On February 19, 2019, the Broncos lost the battle against the Bulls to a buzzer-beater shot by the visiting team in the final seconds of the game to give them the 61-59 victory. Western Michigan hopes to continue to lead in wins at University Arena, having the advantage over Buffalo 7-4.
SCOUTING THE BULLS
Buffalo holds a 13-8 record on the season and is 4-6 in conference play. They are under the direction of 12-year head coach Felisha Legette-Jack, who holds a 143-86 overall record at the helm of Buffalo women's basketball. The Bulls are led by Dyaisha Fair, averaging 22.4 points per game for the team 5.6 rebounds and a team-high 81 assists to go along with 53 steals.
HOME COURT ADVANTAGE
The Broncos are 6-3 on the season when playing at University Arena. Some of their best averages of the year so far have come during home contests. Over eight games hosted, they averaged 81.3 points and 43.5 rebounds, with 43 percent field goal shooting and 29 percent from beyond the arc.
RECORD-BREAKING BRONCO
Breanna Mobley is dominating the rebounding category this season, breaking multiple records in her senior season. Mobley surpassed 1,000 rebounds against Ball State to become the second-ever Bronco to have scored 1,000 points and rebounds in her career. She became a member of the 1,000-point club against Miami on Jan. 20, 2018. The record puts her alongside former WMU legend and coach Pat Charity, who hit the milestone in the 1977-78 season. On Feb. 3 against Miami (Ohio), Mobley moved up to 1,028 rebounds to tie the all-time rebounding record, also earned by Charity, and broke the record on Feb. 8 against Eastern Michigan to move to 1,038 rebounds in her career. Mobley now holds the rebounding record for all of Bronco basketball.
