OMAHA, Neb. – The Western Michigan hockey team extended its winning streak to five games after a 5-2 victory over Omaha on the road at Baxter Arena on Friday night.
Wade Allison had his first multi-goal game of the season, tallying two on the night, while the Broncos (12-9-4, 8-5-2-2 NCHC) also picked up goals from Kale Bennett, Cole Gallant and Jason Polin. Dawson DiPietro and Hugh McGing each had two assists on the night, with freshman goalie Brandon Bussi making 23 saves in net. WMU outshot UNO 40-25 on the night, registering its 10th game of the season with at least 40 shots.
Bennett gave Western Michigan a very early lead with his third goal of the season just 1:36 into the first period. Bennett sealed the wall just outside the UNO zone and took control of the puck and past the blue line. The senior defenseman skated into the slot and fired a shot through the legs of Maverick goalie Isaiah Saville and into the net.
Allison's first of the night pushed the lead to 2-0 at 12:39 in the first period. DiPietro created a turnover in the Omaha zone, winning the puck and finding Allison wide open in the left circle. Allison fired it into the top-left corner of the net for his sixth goal of the season and fifth straight game with a goal.
The Broncos took a 2-0 lead into the second period and weathered the storm as the Mavericks jumped on them early in the second period, getting several chances on net. Gallant flipped the switch with his second goal of the season with 1:45 left in the period to build the lead to 3-0. McGing created at turnover in the neutral zone, with the puck heading to WMU defenseman Mattias Samuelsson at the Bronco blue line. Samuelsson quickly dished the puck to Gallant and he passed it off to McGing. McGing took the puck into the zone and found Josh Passolt on left point. Passolt fired a shot from the top of the left circle and Gallant punched in the rebound. Passolt picked up his 10th helper of the season and McGing his team-best 17th.
Kevin Conley scored at 5:58 in the third period to cut the lead to 3-1 on the power play, tallying a goal from the right circle.
Allison got his second of the night just 40 seconds later on a Western Michigan power play. Cam Lee passed it to DiPietro at the left point and the senior forward found his linemate all alone on the far-side of the net for the tap-in goal, Allison's seventh of the season.
Omaha cut the lead to 4-2 during a major power play, with Nolan Sullivan scoring off a shot by Taylor Ward at 7:37 in the third period.
UNO had a late power play and pulled Saville from net for the extra attacker. The Broncos killed of the power play and Polin scored an empty-net goal, set up by McGing, with 36 seconds left.
