OMAHA, Neb. -- The Western Michigan hockey team picked up its first point of the season after a 3-3 tie and shootout loss to Colorado College at Baxter Arena in Omaha, Neb., on Tuesday afternoon.
The Broncos (0-3-1, 0-3 trailed 3-2 late into the third period. Freshman forward
Luke Grainger fired a shot that was blocked in the right circle. Classmate
Hugh Larkin pounced on the rebound and ripped it through traffic and past CC goalie Matt Vernon and into the net for his first collegiate goal. The game-tying tally was entirely produced by freshmen with Larkin picking up his first collegiate goal, Grainger his first collegiate assist and defenseman Daniel Hislendager his second assist of the season.
The two teams battled in the final 5:54, with the Broncos getting a late power play that was killed off early by a penalty of their own. CC had a power play for the final 30 seconds of regulation, which WMU killed off to earn the point awarded for making it to overtime.
Western Michigan finished off the kill but neither team capitalized during overtime. The shootout went into four rounds with the Tigers winning 2-1 to earn the extra point.
Western Michigan outshot Colorado College 36-35 on the day, including posting a season-high 15 shots on goal for a period in the third.
Austin Cain made 32 saves in the tie. Senior captain
Paul Washe had two goals on the night, while
Ronnie Attard,
Scooter Brickey,
Ethen Frank and
Aidan Fulp each had assists.
CC struck first at 18:06 in the first period on a power play goal by Grant Cruickshank. The senior forward fired a shot from the deep slot after a pass from Josiah Slavin for the team's first goal of the season.
The Tigers struck again with 25 seconds left to play in the period, with Ben Copeland scoring to push the lead to 2-0.
Washe cut the lead in half with the first of his two goals in the second period. While killing a penalty, Brickey passed the puck up ahead to Frank and the senior forward drove into the CC zone. Frank created some space and fired a shot on net, with Washe punching the rebound into the net for his second goal of the season. The goal at 9:39 was also the first short-handed goal of the season for the Broncos.
Washe struck again, this time on the power play at 14:20. Fulp passed it off to Attard at the top of the left circle. The defenseman ripped a shot to the net and it deflected off of Washe's leg and into the net for his third of the season. Attard and Fulp each picked up their second assists of the season on the tally.
CC freshman Hunter McKown scored from the slot at 15:36 in the second period to send the Tigers to the locker room with a 3-2 lead heading into the third period before Larkin tied it up.
WMU's power play finished one-for-three on the night, with Colorado College going one-for-four.
The Broncos have a quick turnaround as the battle St. Cloud State on Wednesday afternoon at 4:35 p.m.
