KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan men's basketball head coach Clayton Bates earned his first career victory as the Broncos defeated Adrian College, 62-42 in their home opener on Monday night.

In the last two games against Adrian and No. 8 Michigan State, Wright has registered 33 points and 17 rebounds.

Behind Wright was junior Adrian Martin with nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field. Martin's nine points was one shy of his career-high. Martin also knocked down one three-pointer and was 2-of-3 from the free-throw line. In his second start of the season senior Rafael Cruz Jr., ranked third on WMU with nine points and led the Brown & Gold with eight rebounds.

Coming off a 19-point performance against No. 8 Michigan State, sophomore B. Artis White had seven points, three rebounds and three assists in 22 minutes of action. Rounding out the scoring action was senior Greg Lee with six, freshman Josiah Freeman with four and freshman Daylan Hamilton, junior Luke Toliver and sophomore Chase Barrs each having two points.

Western Michigan continues its five-game homestand with a pair of games next weekend inside University Arena. The Broncos square off with Detroit Mercy on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 2:00 p.m. before challenging Milwaukee on Sunday, Dec. 13. WMU then begins Mid-American Conference play on Dec. 18 against in-state rival Central Michigan.

It was a slow start for the Broncos who were playing their second game in as many days. WMU jumped out to an early 9-4 lead but was went scoreless for nearly three minutes and had four turnovers during the first two minutes of the game. Neither team was able to get much going offensively as the Broncos went 1-of-6 from the field during a five-minute stretch and held a 12-6 lead at the 12-minute mark.

Midway through the first half the Bronco defense locked in and forced Adrian to go scoreless for nearly three minutes en route to a double digit lead. WMU then embarked on a 12-2 run highlighted by an and-one from Adrian Martin to propel WMU to a 28-12 lead with three minutes left in the first half.

During the last four minutes of the first half, Western Michigan committed four turnovers and made just one field goal as the Broncos took a 30-16 lead into halftime.

To begin the second half both teams traded baskets at a furious pace as Western Michigan ended up with a 34-18 with 15 minutes remaining. Adrian College fought back and cut the Bronco lead down to 10 at the halfway point of the second half as the Bulldogs made six of their next eight field goals.

However, that's the closest Adrian got in the second half as WMU flexed its muscles and made three straight field goals in under a minute to propel the lead back to 46-32.
