KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Western Michigan University gymnastics head coach
Penny Jernigan has announced her team's 2021 schedule, opening on Jan. 24 with a home meet against Northern Illinois, and slated to conclude with the 2021 Mid-American Conference Gymnastics Championships at WMU's Read Fieldhouse.
"Our 2021 competition schedule has been through several revisions because of COVID-19 concerns. It has all come down to what we believe is safest for our student-atheltes, coaches and staff," Jernigan said of the slate. "We're pleased to have it finalized now and know exactly when we'll have the opportunity to start competing."
The schedule opens with a pair of home meets against Northern Illinois (Sunday, Jan. 24) and Central Michigan (Sunday, Jan. 31). The Broncos then visit Eastern Michigan for a quad meet on Sat., Feb. 6, before trips to Bowling Green (Saturday, Feb. 13) and Kent State (Thursday, Feb. 18).
Eastern Michigan visits Read Fieldhouse on Sunday, Feb. 21, before the final dual meet of the year at Ball State on Sunday, Feb. 28. The regular season concludes with a quad meet at Central Michigan on Sunday, March 13.
After a year-long wait due to COVID-19, WMU will host the MAC Championships on Saturday, March. 20.
The Broncos saw their 2020 campaign halted prior to hosting the MAC Championships, but after WMU went 5-1 in conference action to win the regular-season title. Jernigan was named MAC Coach of the Year after capturing the regular-season championship with a roster of six freshmen and just two seniors. In addition, the Broncos finished fourth nationally in grade-point average with 15 student-athletes earning Scholastic All-America Awards from the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association.
