BUFFALO, NY – In its second Mid-American Conference game of the season the Western Michigan women's basketball team connected on 14 three-pointers in an 87-66 loss at Buffalo on Tuesday afternoon.
Western Michigan's 14 three-pointers is the third most in a single game in school history as the Broncos went a staggering 14-of-41 from long distance. It's the 10th time under head coach
Shane Clipfell the Broncos have registered at least 10 made
three-pointers in a game.
The Broncos had a trio of scorers in double figures led by redshirt senior
Reilly Jacobson and junior
Maddie Watters with 15 points each. Watters' 15 points was one shy of her career-high as the junior guard was 5-of-14 from both the field and from long
distance. Watters five made three-pointers is tied for the fifth most in a single-game in school history.
Forward
Reilly Jacobson nearly notched a double-double with 15 points and eight rebounds. Jacobson as 6-of-10 from the field and also had four assists in 25 minutes. It's the third game this season Jacobson has scored in double figures.
Rounding out the trio of scoring was redshirt junior
Abby Voss with 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field. Voss also knocked down three from behind the three-point line, one shy of her career-high.
On the glass redshirt freshman Taylor Williams was a dominant registered a career-high 14 rebounds, seven of which coming on the offensive end. Williams also had seven points, three assists and one steal in 27 minutes.
Off the bench freshman
Lauren Ross delivered a stellar performance once again with nine points, three rebounds and one assist. Ross was 3-of-9 from the field and 3-of-7 from long distance.
As a team the Broncos shot 33.8 percent from the field and 34.1 percent from long distance. It was a slow first half for WMU scoring just 23 points but rebounded in the second half with 43 points. Buffalo narrowly outrebounded WMU, 47-42 with the Brown & Gold holding a 16-12 advantage on the offensive glass.
WMU registered a season-high 20 assists on 23 made baskets while forcing Buffalo to commit 10 turnovers, scoring 10 points off of Buffalo mistakes. Buffalo dominated the paint against WMU, scoring 52.8 percent of its points in the paint.
The Broncos have dropped three straight contest and have an overall record of 1-3 and 0-2 in conference play. Western Michigan is back in action on the road on Saturday, Jan. 2 against Northern Illinois.
To begin the game Buffalo raced out to an early 8-0 lead before the Broncos rallied back to tie the game at 8-8 after a Jacobson lay-up with 4:15 remaining in the first. The Jacobson bucket was the last field goal the Broncos had as the Bulls ended the first quarter on a 19-1 and held 27-9 lead.
The Buffalo run continued through the second quarter as the Bulls ultimately embarked on a 23-1 run to gain a 31-9 advantage. WMU halted the run after a three-pointer in the corner from freshman
Lauren Ross. To end the second quarter, WMU embarked on a 7-2 run to trim its deficit down to 42-23 heading into halftime.
In the third quarter the Broncos outscored Buffalo, 26-22 and trimmed the Buffalo lead down to 59-47 with 2:28 remaining in the quarter. Clawing its way back, WMU was led by
Maddie Watters who connected on three consecutive three-pointers. That was the closest WMU got however as the Bulls pulled away scoring five of the next seven points to take a 64-49 into the fourth quarter.
Buffalo shot a staggering 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Broncos 23-17. Midway through the quarter, WMU was held scoreless from the field for over three minutes as the Bulls jumped out to a 76-54 lead. Despite a late 5-0 run by the Broncos, the Bulls pulled away at the end to secure an 87-66 victory.
