Cain Makes Career-High 46 Saves as WMU Battles No.7 Denver to 3-3 Tie

OMAHA, Neb. -- Senior goalie Austin Cain made a career-high 46 saves as the Western Michigan hockey team wrapped up the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Pod with a 3-3 tie and shootout loss to No. 7 Notre Dame on Saturday evening.

WMU picked up goals by Luke Grainger, Ronnie Attard and Drew Worrad, while Paule Washe and Ty Glover each had two assists on the night. Grainger had an assist to join Glover with their first career multipoint games.

The Broncos (2-6-2, 2-6-2-0-0-0-2 NCHC) were outshot 49-20 on the night and finished 1-for-4 on the power play, with the Pioneers going 2-for-4.

Western Michigan opened up to an early lead with a goal by Grainger just 2:50 into the game. Glover was along the left boards and passed the buck backward between his legs to Grainger. Grainger pushed it up to Washe and the two were off on a two-on-one. Washe skated toward the goal line through the left circle and centered it to Grainger for the tap-in. The goal was Grainger's second of the season, with Washe picking up his third assist of the year and Glover tallying his second.

After heading into the locker room with a 1-0 lead, the Broncos extended it to 2-0 just 13 seconds into the second period. Grainger setup Attard for the one-timer from the top of the right circle. Attard's shot deflected off of a DU defenseman in front of the net and in for his first goal of the season. Grainger tallied his second assist of the season, with Washe tallying his fourth.

DU scored two straight goals to square the game up at 2-2. The first came from Brett Edwards at 5:50 in the second period, firing a shot through a screen and into the net. McKade Webster tied the game up at 2-2 on a power play goal at 9:20, scoring on a wraparound after a rebound.

Worrad scored at 14:51 to give the Broncos a 3-2 lead on a power play goal. Glover fired a shot on net and Worrad jabbed at the puck from in front of the crease, pushing it into the net for his second goal of the season and team-leading 10th point. Junior defenseman Michael Joyaux also picked up an assist on the goal as WMU carried its lead into the third period.

Cole Guttman scored on a back-door play on the power play to tie the game at 4:46 in the third period.

The Pioneers outshot the Broncos 13-1 in the final period but Cain kept the score level and WMU secured the point and headed to 3-on-3 overtime.

Neither team took advantage of the overtime, with the game progressing to a shootout. Webster scored the deciding goal in the third round after each team had been stopped twice.

The Broncos are now off and resume play back at Lawson Ice Arena on Jan. 2-3 against Miami at 7:05 p.m. No fans will be permitted due to current restrictions regarding COVID-19. The games can be seen live on NCHC.tv and heard on the Bronco Radio Network.
