KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan Athletics caught up with former Western Michigan volleyball player Lena Oliver for a Q&A in this edition of
Behind the W.
It was a stellar four-year career for Oliver in the Brown & Gold being named 2012 Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year while also earning First Team All-MAC honors three consecutive seasons. Oliver was a two-time Cobra Magazine National Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the 2004-2013 WMU All-Decade Team.
When Oliver completed her career in 2013, she earned a number of special spots in WMU, conference and NCAA history. Her career total of 2,544 digs ranks second all-time in both Bronco and MAC history, while her career average of 5.34 digs per set is the top mark in the history of the WMU program. Oliver's senior season saw her as the NCAA Division I active career leader in digs and digs per set.
Following her playing career Oliver became a teacher and spent four years in the Lakeview School District before transitioning to Battle Creek Public School in August of 2019.
