Broncos Fall to No. 15 Notre Dame, 4-1

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A big second period doomed the Western Michigan hockey team as the Broncos fell 4-1 in front of a sellout crowd at Lawson Ice Arena on Sunday night.

All four of Notre Dame's goals came in the second period. UND goalie Cale Morris made 40 saves on the night, with the Broncos carrying the shots on goal edge at 41-27

Once again the two teams battled to a scoreless tie after the first period, with the Broncos outshooting the Fighting Irish 15-8.
It was Notre Dame breaking through at 10:41 in the second period on a goal by Matt Hellickson. After a flurry of chances by UND, Cam Morrison had the puck at the goal line to the right of the net and found Hellickson in the slot for his third goal of the season.

The Fighting Irish pushed ahead, 2-0, at 13:15, just eight seconds after being awarded a power play. Morrison again set up the goal, this time finding Alex Steeves in the slot for the tally.

Morrison put UND up 3-0 with a goal at 16:59 in the second period. Steeves fired a shot from the far right edge of the right circle and Morrison redirected into the net from just in front for his second goal in the series.

Steeves scored his second of the night with 1:29 left in the second period, scoring right off a faceoff win by Micahel Graham to push Notre Dame's lead to 4-0.

Western Michigan's lone goal came at 15:52 on the power play. Wade Allison took a pass from Hugh McGing and skated into the slot. He found freshman forward Jason Polin wide open in the left circle and he fired it into the top-right corner of the net for his second goal of the season. The assist was Allison's third of the season and McGing's 11th.

The Broncos resume National Collegiate Hockey Conference play this weekend, traveling to Minnesota-Duluth to take on the Bulldogs on Friday and Saturday at 8:07 p.m. Both games will be on NCHC.tv and on the Bronco Radio Network.
