CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Western Michigan men's tennis team has swept the Mid-American Conference weekly awards, as announced on Wednesday afternoon. Senior's
Jannik Opitz and
Kennosuke Nouchi were named the Doubles Team of the Week, while Opitz earned Singles Player of the Week recognition.
Opitz and Nouchi teamed up at #1 doubles on Sunday to defeat Brandon Ancona and Brian Pecyna from Valparaiso 6-4. Their victory clinched the doubles point for the Broncos, who would go on to beat the Crusaders by a 4-3 score. Opitz also won at #1 doubles with sophomore
Peter Kuszynski on Saturday against Illinois State, beating Diego Le Gal Perez and Jorge Bartra. Nouchi joined junior
Zac Faveri on that same day to defeat Melker Isaksson and Brandon Lew at #3 doubles.
This marks the fifth time that they have received MAC Doubles Team of the Week honors together and the second time this year. Jannik has earned this award nine total times with four different partners, while Kennosuke has achieved it seven times during his career between two partners.
Opitz went 2-0 at #1 singles on the weekend, helping the Broncos earn two wins on the road. He defeated Diego Le Gal Perez from Illinois State in straight sets on Saturday (6-1, 6-4). Against Valparaiso on Sunday, Jannik beat the reigning Summit League Player of the Year in Brandon Ancona (6-4, 3-6, 6-2).
It is the fourth time that the native of Hildesheim, Germany has achieved this accolade in his career, and the second straight week for the Broncos after Nouchi received it last Wednesday.
Western Michigan will head to Ann Arbor for a match with Michigan on Saturday, February 1 at 6 p.m.
