BUFFALO, NY – For the third straight game and ninth time this season the Western Michigan men's basketball team had four score in double figures as the Broncos fell on the road at Buffalo 90-79 on Tuesday night inside Alumni Arena.
Against the two-time defending Mid-American Conference Champions Western Michigan was led by redshirt junior
Brandon Johnson and freshman
Titus Wright with 16 points. It matched a career-high point total for Wright who was a stellar 6-of-7 from the field along with six rebounds, four of which came on the offensive glass.
Johnson notched his sixth straight double digit performance with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Johnson matched Wright with a team-high six rebounds and was a perfect 2-for-2 from behind the three-point line. Over the last five games the Chicago, Ill., native is averaging 16.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
Junior
Michael Flowers ranked third on the team with 14 points on 4-of-12 shooting from the field against the Bulls. Flowers was 5-of-6 from the free-throw line while earning a team-high five assists. With 14 points, Flowers has now scored in double figures in 23 straight contests dating back to last season.
In 23 minutes of action freshman
B. Artis White recorded his ninth double-digit scoring performance of the season with 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field with three three-pointers. White ranked second on the team with three assists while collecting two steals.
Off the bench the Broncos were led by freshman
Chase Barrs with six points, his highest scoring output since having eight points against Aquinas College on Dec. 18. Senior
Jared Printy knocked down a left wing three and a 15-foot jumper for five points while sophomore
Patrick Emilien earned four points and four rebounds off the bench.
Western Michigan committed 16 turnovers on the night, resulting in 24 points for the Bulls. The Broncos were also outrebounded 38-31 with Buffalo holding a 15-7 advantage on the offensive glass. Buffalo dominated near the basket scoring 56 of its 90 points in the paint.
As a team WMU shot 50 percent from the field and was 8-of-17 from beyond the three-point line. The Broncos stifled the Bulls as the three-point line as Buffalo went just 5-of-22 from distance.
WMU now has an overall record of 9-10 and 2-4 in conference play. The Broncos continue their road swing with a West Division match-up at Northern Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 24. WMU seeks its first road MAC victory since Feb. 23, 2018.
The two teams went back and forth to begin the game as Buffalo jumped out to a 6-2 lead just two minutes into the game before WMU responded with five straight points from Johnson. Beginning the game, the two teams went a combined 7-of-8 from the field en route to a 11-10 lead for Buffalo at the under-16 media timeout.
Out of the media timeout the Broncos made six of their next eight field goals to take a 21-17 lead before Buffalo rallied back to tie the game at 21 midway through the first half. WMU regained the lead at the nine-minute mark thanks to a four-point play from White before the Bulls held WMU scoreless the next three minutes of action to regain a one-point lead.
Through the final five minutes of the first half Western Michigan held Buffalo to just 3-of-13 from the field as the two teams were tied at 43 heading into the locker room. During the first 20 minutes of action WMU shot a staggering 60.9 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from three.
To begin the second half both teams went on 4-0 runs within the first two minutes of play before the Bulls raced out to a 55-47 lead thanks in large part to an 8-0 run. The Broncos cut their deficit down to three with 12:45 remaining after a fast break lay-up from Flowers. The fast-break lay-up was set up by a long outlet pass from center

WMU tied the game at 64 with nine minutes after back-to-back three-pointers from Emilien and Printy. However, Buffalo responded once again, embarking on a 10-2 run to gain a 74-66 advantage with 5:03 remaining.
One minute later Buffalo extended its lead to double digit and down the stretch made eight of its final 10 field goals to secure the 90-79 victory. Western Michigan was held scoreless from the field the final 2:40 of regulation.
