Broncos Fall off Golden Goal in Overtime

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The DePaul men's soccer team scored a game-clinching goal in overtime to defeat Western Michigan 1-0 in non-conference action Friday at the WMU Soccer Complex. The Broncos and Blue Demons remained in a scoreless tie after the full 90 minutes of regulation.

"In college soccer, you can't let a team hang around," said head coach Chad Wiseman. "We created many scoring chances and had great set piece opportunities, but just lacked a killer instinct to put one in the goal. DePaul hung around and made us pay the price."

After an evenly played first half, the Broncos took control of the pace in the second half, generating five shots on the DePaul goalkeeper. Senior forward Anthony Bowie, who scored two goals for Western Michigan in a victory earlier in the week, led his team with four shots on the evening.

The lone goal of the contest came off the foot of DePaul junior defender Brayden Callipari, who scored his first goal of the season after controlling a rebound off the foot of Western Michigan goalkeeper Isaac Walker and burying it in the back of the net to seal the win.

The Broncos earned 11 corner kicks in the match, but were unable to capitalize on those scoring opportunities. With the win, the Blue Demons improve to 2-1 on the season, while Western Michigan sits at 1-2.

"There is no time to feel sorry for ourselves," said Wiseman. "We have to turn around and get ready for Green Bay."

The Broncos will travel to Wisconsin for that match with Green Bay on Sunday, with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m. ET. The match will be streamed live on ESPN3.
