KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team opened Mid-American Conference play with a 3-3 tie against Kent State at the WMU Soccer Complex on Saturday morning.
The game was rescheduled for Saturday morning due to weather issues on Friday.
WMU picked up two goals from Morgan Otteson and one from Bailey Korhhorn. The Broncos were outshot 19-14 overall, with an 11-8 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalie Maggie Rogers made eight saves.
The Broncos jumped out to a very early lead with two goals in the first four minutes of the game. Korhorn set up Otteson just 61 seconds into the game to go up 1-0. The goal was Otteson's third of the season, with Korhorn tallying her third assist. Minutes later at 3:19 Korhorn converted a penalty kick to push the lead to 2-0. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native registered her third goal of the season and her second penalty kick of the year.
WMU held a 2-0 lead at the half and added to it in the 54th minute. This time it was senior forward Grace Labadie setting up Otteson for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
KSU converted a penalty kick in the 59th minute to finally get on the board, cutting the lead to 3-1. The Golden Flashes added to its total in the 66th minute when Anna Campanella set up Vital Kats for her firsr goal of the season. Kats led all players with seven total shots on the day.
Kent State tied it up in the 80th minute, with Hellstrom setting up Maddie Holmes.
Neither team took advantage of the two extra periods. Kent State fired off a combined six shots in the overtimes but Rogers only was called on to make saves twice.
The Broncos have a quick turnaround, hosting Ohio on Sunday at 1 p.m. for 90's Day. Fans are encouraged to wear their favorite pair of acid washed jeans, colorful windbreaker or any other 90's fashion they may own and cheer on the Broncos.
