KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan freshman midfielder Brennan Creek cracked the scoreboard for the only time Sunday as the Broncos held off Wright State 1-0 in exhibition men's soccer action. Creek pushed in a loose ball with just under three minutes remaining in the first half to provide the match's lone goal.
WMU, with four days of preseason practices under its belt, came out strong in the opening half and controlled much of the run of play. The Broncos generated a few early chances, but it was not until Creek broke through in the 42nd minute that Western Michigan took a 1-0 lead.
On the scoring play, Wright State goalie Joel Sundell had the ball in his hands before dropping it with Creek standing nearby to pick up the tally.
Overall in the first half, WMU outshot Wright State 4-1 with the Raiders' best opportunity coming in the 34th minute on a high shot by Alec Philippe.
The Broncos and Raiders picked up the pace in the second half, registering three shots in the first 13 minutes with each goalie collecting one save. Wright State's Deri Corfe nearly knotted the score at 1-1 in the 57th minute as his shot rang off the left post.
Western Michigan's Anthony Bowie forced an Alex Williams save in the 60th minute but the action remained in the midfield with subs flowing in and out for both teams over the next 20 minutes.
The Broncos registered the final two shots but could not score again.
For the game, Western Michigan outshot the Raiders 8-3. The Broncos also earned seven corner kicks. WMU goalkeeper Lukas Von Lienen went the full 90 and was credited with one save. For Wright State, Sundell made one save in the first half with Williams tallying three in the second half.
The Broncos finish exhibition play Aug. 26 at Notre Dame with a 5 p.m. match.
