Whittington Shines During NBA Summer League with Mavericks

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Over the past week in the NBA Summer League, former Bronco great Shayne Whittington shined off the bench for the Dallas Mavericks in hopes of earning an NBA contract.

In five games, Whittington averaged 18.8 minutes per game off the bench and ranked fifth on the team with 9.2 points per game and fourth on the team with 4.8 rebounds per game. The former Bronco also averaged 1.0 assists, 0.60 steals and shot a staggering 52 percent from the field.

Whittington scored in two of the five games played including a 19-point performance against Croatia to lead all scorers. In the NBA Summer League quarterfinals against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Whittington played 23 minutes and led the Mavericks with eight rebounds.

The Paw Paw, Mich., native's breakout performance came in a 79-71 win over Croatia, scoring a game-high 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Whittington also pulled in four rebounds, one assist and two steals along with going a perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line.

In the first game of NBA Summer League against the Brooklyn Nets, Whittington played 20 minutes off the bench and had 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the three-point line.

As a team the Dallas Mavericks went 3-1 in the preliminary round of the NBA Summer League season and earned the No.6 seed in the playoffs.

After strong play during NBA Summer League action, Whittington will look to earn an NBA contract for the second time in his career. Whittington played for the Indiana Pacers during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.
