Golden Flashes Down Broncos in Saturday Doubleheader

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan softball team closed out its series versus Kent State University Saturday afternoon, coming up short in both games of the doubleheader.

After dropping game one of the series yesterday, the Golden Flashes earned the series sweep over the Broncos with 6-3 and 4-1 victories Saturday. The Broncos' record falls to 10-17 overall and 3-4 in the MAC, while the Golden Flashes improve to 6-2 during conference play.

Kent State 6, Western Michigan 3
The Broncos gave up a 3-1 lead while conceding five runs in the sixth inning which led to the three-run loss. WMU mistakes were costly, as five Bronco errors resulted in three Kent State unearned runs.

WMU put together consistent at bats through the first three frames to push across a trio of runs. Kaylen Glenfield recorded one of her two RBI to score Mackenzie Swinehart, who led off the game with a single to put WMU up 1-0. After KSU tied the game up in the top of the third, the Brown & Gold answered with a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead.

The Golden Flashes led off the sixth inning with a double and later forced three Bronco errors, scoring six runs off three runs to claim the three-run lead. Reily Galloway came in to relieve Stefanick and finished the game allowing one run in 1.2 innings. Stefanick suffered the loss, giving up three earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched.

Swinehart, Stefanick, and Glenfield led WMU at the plate with a pair of hits each.

Kent State 4, Western Michigan 1
Similar to game one of the twinbill, the Broncos lost an early lead with a strong sixth inning from the visitors.

Logan Carter notched her second solo homer of the weekend, her fourth of the season, to give WMU a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. However, it was the sole run of the game for the Broncos.

Three runs in the sixth and another on the seventh gave Kent State the 4-1 advantage. The Golden Flashes tallied three hits, including a pair of triples to take a 3-1 lead. A solo homer in the seventh granted KSU the three-run cushion.

Jordan Kurth took the loss in the pitcher's circle while tallying five strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Galloway pitched the final 1.2 innings again.
