Broncos Drop Home Opener to Kent State

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan softball team opened its home schedule at Ebert Field Friday, April 5, dropping game one of a Mid-American Conference series versus Kent State by a score of 5-2.Ā

The Broncos' record falls to 10-15 overall and 3-2 in the MAC, while the Golden Flashes improve to 4-2 during conference play.Ā

After gaining an early lead, WMU led 1-0 through five innings before a five-run rally in the top of the sixth gave Kent State a 5-1 advantage. Andrea Scali held the Bronco offense in check, limiting the home team to just three hits while nothing 12 strikeouts.Ā

Mackenzie Swinehart led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single and came around to score off a RBI single from Brooke Wyman to grant the Brown & Gold its one-run lead in which they held until the KSU comeback in the sixth.Ā

The Golden Flashes scored five runs off five hits in the sixth. A two-RBI double gave KSU a 2-1 lead while a single through the left side scored another for the eventual game-winning run.

With two outs down 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Logan Carter hit her third homer of the season to trim the KSU lead to three, but it was too little too late.Ā

Reily Galloway suffered the loss in the pitcher's circle for the Broncos, falling to 3-6 on the season while tying a season-high with six strikeouts.Ā
