Women's Tennis Hosts Toledo Sunday during Senior Day

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team is set for its final home match of the season this Sunday, April 14, hosting the University of Toledo during Senior Day at 1 p.m. inside West Hills Athletic Club. 

SENIOR DAY
Three Bronco seniors will be honored prior to their final regular season match in Brown & Gold. Denise Azcui, Katja Fevralev, and Melina Lyubomirova will be recognized for their contribution to the program. Over the past four years this senior class has guided Western Michigan to an overall record of 51-42 throughout four seasons, including a runner-up finish in the MAC Tournament their freshmen season in which the team recorded 19 wins, the most by a Bronco squad since 2009. This season, the trio has led Western Michigan to a 10-3 record at home, paced by a four-match winning streak and the best start to a dual-match season since their rookie years in 2016.

LAST TIME OUT 
Western Michigan played its first outdoor match at Sorensen Courts last Sunday, prevailing 4-3 over the University of Akron. Akron opened the match with a win on court one in doubles, but WMU wins by Melina Lyubomirova & Femke Tjon-A-Joe on court two and Denise Azcui & Gabriela Slavova on court three granted the home team the doubles point. The Zips tied the match at 2-2 in singles play, winning on courts one and three while Tjon-A-Joe won at court four. Azcui and Kristina Tiraspolsky both earned wins in two sets to clinch the match. 

AZCUI NAMED MAC SINGLES PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior co-captain Denise Azcui at No. 2 singles won 7-5, 6-4 over Akron's Miruna Vasilescu, giving the Broncos a 3-2 advantage, which eventually led to a 4-3 victory over Akron. 

HOME COOKING
The Broncos are 10-3 on their home court, including four-straight victories Feb. 15-24. WMU had four out its first five matches to open the 2019 schedule at home, coming away with a 4-1 start, marking the best start to a dual-match season since the 2016 Broncos also began its spring campaign going 4-1. 

ABOUT THE ROCKETS
Toledo has dropped two conference matches in a row, falling 4-3 to both Miami and Bowling Green while its' conference record dropped to 2-3 in the MAC and 10-8 overall. The Broncos lost to the Rockets 4-3 last year in Toledo, Ohio. 

UP NEXT
The Broncos close out the regular season with a pair of road matches. WMU faces Miami in Oxford, Ohio Friday, April 19 prior to the regular season finale at Bowling Green on Sunday, April 21.
