Broncos Fall to NIU on Senior Day

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan women's basketball team closed out its regular season with a 74-71 loss versus Northern Illinois University during senior day on Saturday, March 9.

The Broncos end their season with a 10-19 overall record along with a 4-14 mark during Mid-American Conference play. Western Michigan receives the No. 10 seed for the MAC Tournament and will head to No. 7 NIU to play the Huskies again on Monday, March 11 at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Seniors Logan McCane, Meredith Miller, Jasmyn Walker, and Deja Wimby were honored post game for their contribution to the program.

WMU turned in a strong first half, leading by as many as 10 while taking a 35-27 lead into the break. The Huskies fired back, however, outscoring the Broncos 47-36 in the final 20 minutes while the lead changed nine times throughout the second half.

The Brown & Gold held a 34-28 advantage in rebounds while shooting 40.4 percent from the field (23-of-57) and 31.3 percent from beyond the arc (10-of-32). The visitors forced 16 Bronco turnovers and put together a 22-for-25 output at the charity stripe, led by Mikayla Voigt, who made 10 free throws and a game-high 26 points.

Leighah-Amori Wool led WMU with 19 points, paced by four three-pointers. Jasmyn Walker followed with 17 points and was just a pair of rebounds shy of a double-double with a team-high eight rebounds. Deja Wimby added 13 points, five assists, and tied a season-high with five steals.

Six minutes into the game, Leighah Wool converted her second of four triples on the day to give WMU a 13-8 lead at the first media timeout. With WMU's third three-pointer of the day, the 2018-19 Broncos surpassed the Western Michigan single season record for most three-point field goals made in a season, with 208. The 1998-99 WMU squad previously held the record with 207.

WMU outscored NIU 16-9 in the second quarter and led by as many as 10 as back-to-back triples from Maddie Watters and Kamrin Reed, followed by a Wimby layup gave the Broncos a 35-25 advantage with 3:21 left in the first half.

NIU opened the third quarter outscoring WMU 16-7 to take its first lead since the first basket of the second frame, leading 43-42 with 3:32 left in the quarter. WMU answered, closing out the quarter on a 9-5 run to grab a 51-48 lead heading into the fourth.

Play went back-and-forth in the final 10 minutes. Neither team led by more than four points, trading several leads. Down by three with four minutes left, the Broncos fought back to take a 69-68 lead with a pair of free throws each from Wool and Walker with just under three minutes remaining, but the Huskies' Voigt answered at the line again, guiding NIU to hold on down the stretch.
