CLEARWATER, Fla.- The Western Michigan softball team picked up two wins in Florida Saturday, defeating Holy Cross 4-2 and St. Francis 10-8.
Sophomore pitcher
Sydney Stefanick continued her hot play, batting .625 for the day, going 5-for-8 with a home run and driving in five runs. All five of her RBIs came in the 10-8 win over St. John's as she hit a two-run single in the sixth and a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh.
In a back-and-forth game, St. Francis scored a run in the top of the seventh to take an 8-7 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore third baseman
Sophia Ehlers drew a leadoff walk and with two outs junior outfielder
Kaylen Glenfield was also able to reach safely on an error. Down to the Broncos' last strike out the game, on a 2-2 count Stefanick blasted the game-winning home run to center field.
Stefanick has four home runs this season, hitting two yesterday against St. John's and a game-winning grand slam last week against Binghamton.
The Broncos had a season-high 14 hits against St. Francis. Junior outfielder
Mackenzie Swinehart batted 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, senior shortstop
Brooke Wyman went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Stefanick started the game in the circle and threw four innings, before giving away to sophomore
Reily Galloway. Galloway threw 2.1 innings of relief and senior
Jordan Kurth came in the record the final two outs in the top of the seventh to earn the win..
In the first game of the day on Saturday, Western Michigan had to overcome a 2-0 deficit in the 4-2 victory. All four Bronco runs came in the third inning.
Glenfield hit a one-out RBI double. Stefanick followed with a single and sophomore catcher
Logan Carter hit a single to left field. The ball rolled through the outfielder's legs allowing Glenfield and Stefanick to score. Carter later scored on a wild pitch for the Broncos' fourth run.
Kurth also earned the win in game one, throwing a complete game and striking out six. Her record improved to 3-4 on the season.
Western Michigan (6-11) concludes its 13-game road trip in Florida tomorrow, facing UMass at 9 a.m.
