CLEARWATER, Fla.- The Western Michigan softball team concluded its 13-game spring trip to Florida with a thrilling 6-5, eight-inning victory over UMass on Sunday.
In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore pitcher
Sydney Stefanick hit a game-tying solo home run to send the game into extra innings. It was Stefanick's fifth home run of the season, and fourth in the last four games, Yesterday, she hit a walk-off three-run home run in a 10-8 win over St. Francis.
Following Stefanick's solo shot, UMass pulled back in front, 5-4, with a run in the top of the eighth.
With one away in the bottom of the eighth, WMU senior second baseman
Erin Barg delivered the game-winning hit, sending a two-run single to right field. Barg batted 2-for-5 in the game with a double, a single and three RBIs.
WMU opened the game in an early 4-0 hole, as UMass scored a pair of runs in the top of the first and second innings.
The Broncos got on the board in the bottom of the third, after junior right fielder
Mackenzie Swinehart hit a one-out single and scored on a two-out double by junior center fielder
Kaylen Glenfield.
Doubles by sophomore third baseman
Sophia Ehlers and Barg (RBI) resulted in a second run for WMU in the fifth. In the sixth, Ehlers drew a two-out walk and in the next at bat, Swinehart roped an RBI double to right center to pull WMU within one, 4-3. Stefanick's home run in the seventh tied the game at 4-4, setting up Barg's heroics.
Senior
Jordan Kurth started the game in the pitcher's circle for WMU and threw two innings. Stefanick (4-3) stepped in to throw six innings of relief, holding UMass to three hits and one run (unearned), while striking out four to pick up the win.
Western Michigan totaled 11 hits in the game. UMass had nine. Senior first baseman
Jenna Faultersack led WMU with three hits.
It was the Broncos' third win in a row. Over five games this past weekend, Stefanick batted .588 (10-for-17) with four home runs, a double and 10 RBIs.
Western Michigan (7-11) returns north to play its first games in its home state. The Broncos travel to Michigan State for a 4 p.m. matchup on Thursday, March 14. WMU then heads to nationally top-25 ranked Michigan on Tuesday, March 19 for a 4 p.m. contest.
