CLEARWATER, Fla.- The Western Michigan softball team was edged in two games Friday afternoon, falling to St. John's 5-4 in eight innings and Chattanooga, 2-1.
Sophomore
Sydney Stefanick finished the day batting .571, going 4-for-7 with two home runs, a double and four RBIs.
Stefanick drove in all four runs against St. John's, hitting a pair of two-run homers. She went deep in the top of the first, giving WMU a 2-0 advantage, and hit her second home run in the top of third to extend the Broncos' lead to 4-1.
Junior
Mackenzie Swinehart scored on each of Stefanick's long balls. Swinehart hit her third triple of the season, singled and walked in the game. Stefanick and Swinehart combined for four of WMU's five hits.
St. John's evened the game at 4-4 with three runs in the bottom of the third. WMU had a runner on third with one out in the top of the eighth, but could not push the go-ahead tally across. St. John's scored in the bottom half of the inning for the come-from behind win.
Senior pitcher
Jordan Kurth threw four shutout innings of relief before surrendering the run in the eighth, taking the loss.
Western Michigan scored its lone run against Chattnooga in the third inning. Sophomore
Logan Carter hit a leadoff single and scored on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by senior
Jenna Faultersack.
Chattanooga tallied both of its runs with two outs in the top of the fourth to pull ahead, 2-1. The Broncos had their chances to tie the game, but left a runner stranded on base in each of their final four at bats.
Stefanick pitched a complete game and struck out a career-high eight batters in the loss. WMU had five hits total, while Chattanooga had six.
Western Michigan (4-11) has three games remaining in Florida. The Broncos play Holy Cross (10:30 a.m.) and Sain Francis (5 p.m.) tomorrow and finish against UMass on Sunday (9 a.m.).
