MUNCIE, Ind. – During the final 10 minutes of play Western Michigan men's basketball scored just 14 points including a 1-of-14 stretch from the field, resulting in a 79-59 loss to Ball State on Saturday afternoon inside Worthen Arena.
The Broncos trailed 51-45 with 10:10 remaining in the second half before the Cardinals embarked on an 18-4 run en route to a double digit lead. During the Ball State run, WMU was 1-of-14 from the field.
Western Michigan had three score in double figures for the 17
th time this season, led by senior
Seth Dugan who registered his 10
th double-double of the year. Dugan registered 17 points along with 12 rebounds on 8-of-12 shooting from the field.
It's the second straight game Dugan has recorded a double-double and fourth time in the last five games. Over the past five games the Otsego, Mich., native is averaging 20.8 points and 11.2 rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Michael Flowers poured in 15 points to go along with three assists and one steal. Despite being 4-of-11 from the field, Flowers made his mark at the free-throw line going 6-of-8. Flowers reached the double digit mark for the third straight game and 18th time this season.
Senior
Josh Davis scored in double digits for the first time since Jan.19, recording 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field while shooting 80 percent from the free-throw line. Davis also knocked down two three-pointers to go along with six rebounds and three steals.
Behind the trio of double digit scoring was freshman
Patrick Emilien with eight points and four rebounds in 33 minutes of action. Off the bench, junior
Adida Ikongshul had three points while freshman
Adrian Martin had two.
As a team WMU shot 37.5 percent from the field and connected on five three-pointers, it's second lowest total of the season. The Broncos held Ball State to 42.3 percent shooting in the first half prior to the Cardinals shooting 55.9 percent in the second half and 50 percent for the game.
WMU was narrowly outrebounded by Ball State, 39-33 while having 15 turnovers to BSU's, 11. The Cardinals scored 30 points in the paint on Saturday and had 15 fast break points to WMU's five.
The Broncos drop to 0-10 in Mid-American Conference play and 6-17 overall. WMU returns to University Arena for a stretch of three home games in five days beginning on Tuesday, Feb.12 at 7:00 p.m. against Northern Illinois.
It was a slow start by both teams to begin the game as WMU and BSU went a combined 2-of-10 from the field through the first three minutes of play. Despite the slow start the Broncos found their rhythm and held a 7-2 lead at the 15-minute mark.
Ball State took its first lead of the game midway through the first half after a three-pointer by Kyle Mallers from the right wing gave the Cardinals a 10-9 lead. During the next four minutes, the Brown & Gold were held scoreless as Ball State went on a 15-3 run to gain a double digit advantage at 22-12 with 4:43 to play.
Trailing by double digits, Western Michigan responded with a 12-2 run the final 3:32 of play to trail 27-26 at halftime. The 12-2 run was highlighted by Flowers knocking down his only three-pointer of the night and getting fouled with three seconds left as WMU trailed 27-26 heading into the locker room.
The Broncos regained the lead right out of the gate to begin the second half as Dugan knocked down a 15-foot jumper in the paint to give WMU a 28-27 lead. WMU opened up its lead to three after a Davis right wing jumper before Ball State embarked on an 8-0 run to hold a 36-30 advantage.
From the 15-minute mark to the halfway point of the second half, the Cardinals and Broncos played at a furious pace with both teams running in transition and scoring. Ball State held on to a 51-45 lead at the halfway mark while WMU was 5-of-6 from the field during the fast-paced play.
WMU trailed by six with 10 minutes remaining prior to the Ball State offense and forward Kyle Mallers going on a hot streak. The Cardinals embarked on an 18-4 run while Mallers connected on three of his next four three-pointers to give BSU a double digit advantage. During the run the Bronco offense stalled, going just 1-of-14 from the field.
Down the stretch WMU managed to score just 14 points as Ball State earned its second straight conference victory. Ball State with the win improved to 13-11 and 4-7 in MAC play. Mallers led the Cardinals with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
