COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
Hugh McGing scored 18 seconds into overtime to give Western Michigan Hockey a 5-4 comeback victory during game one of road series at Colorado College Friday evening.
The Broncos (18-10-1, 11-7-1-1 NCHC) overcame a pair of two-goal deficits, scoring three unanswered goals after the Tigers led 4-2 early into the third period.
Colorado College owned a 33-29 shot on goal advantage, while both teams went 0-for-2 on the power play.
McGing recorded his third multi-goal performance of the season, while
Luke Bafia and
Lawton Courtnall tallied two assists each, along with a two-point night (1g-1a) from
Ethen Frank.
The home team grabbed a 2-1 lead in the first period. CC opened the scoring near the midway point of the first period as Chris Wilkie capitalized on a two-on-one chance, one-timing a pass past Gorsuch. WMU answered just a minute later, as
Cam Lee scored his seventh of the season, unassisted. The Broncos conceded a goal with just under two minutes remaining as the Tigers jammed in a loose puck in the crease off a rebound to grab a one-goal lead at the first intermission.
WMU and Colorado College traded goals in the middle frame. The Tigers took their first first two-goal advantage of the night with under five minutes remaining in the middle frame. After a big save by
Trevor Gorsuch, Trey Bradley put in the rebound with a wrap-around tally. However, the Broncos found an answer with a big goal at the 18:45 minute mark as Frank buried a one-timer back door off a great pass from Bafia, heading into the final 20 minutes down just one goal.
The Tigers scored early into the third to go up 4-2 before the Bronco comeback. Just under two minutes in, Colorado College finished on an odd-man rush to go back up by two goals. McGing and
Austin Rueschhoff then scored two minutes apart at 4:24 and 6:23 to knot the game at 4-4, where the score stood at the end of regulation.
McGing's OT goal was a result on nice centering pass from Courtnall, who spun around a backhand pass from the corner on to the tape of McGing in the slot, giving Western Michigan its first overtime win of the year.
"It couldn't have been a more perfect pass right on my tape from Lawton," McGing said. "We knew we weren't playing our game when we were down two. We just needed to get into our structure and game plan. Trevor Gorsuch stood on his head for us and kept us in the game."
Gorsuch made 29 saves and improved his record to 16-6-1 on the season.
The Brown & Gold goes for the series sweep tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. (ET).
