Men’s Basketball Drops Overtime Battle at EMU, 77-76

YPSILANTI, Mich.  – It was a back and forth affair in Ypsilanti on Saturday afternoon as Western Michigan men's basketball played its second straight overtime game, falling to in-state rival Eastern Michigan, 77-76.

It was a tight contest throughout between the two rivals as neither team led by more than eight. During the final 10 minutes of play, WMU nor EMU held a lead larger than three. Overall the score was tied 10 times with 13 lead changes.

For the first time since Jan. 15 the Broncos had four players score in double figures as four of the five WMU starters reached double figures. The Brown & Gold were led by senior Seth Dugan with 15 points. Fellow senior Josh Davis along with sophomore Michael Flowers each had 14.

Dugan collected his 12th double-double of the season against the Eagles with 10 rebounds to go along with 15 points. Dugan was 6-of-11 from the field and also had five assists in 41 minutes played. With 12 double-doubles the Otsego, Mich., native moved into fourth place for most in a single season in school history.

Earning his fifth double-double of the season was fellow senior Josh Davis with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Davis was 5-of-10 from the field against the Eagles while registering four assists and two steals. The Detroit, Mich., native earned nine of his 12 rebounds in the second half and overtime period.

It's the fifth time this season the senior duo have each recorded a double-double in a game and first time since defeating Youngstown State back on Dec.8.

Flowers scored in double figures for the seventh straight game with 14 points to go along with two rebounds and five assists. Flowers earned half of his points from the free-throw line going 7-of-9. Freshman William Boyer-Richard scored 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field with three from long distance.

Western Michigan shot 40 percent from the field while going 9-of-25 from beyond the three-point line. Eastern Michigan held a distinct advantage at the free-throw line, attempting 38 free-throws to WMU's 19. The Broncos outrebounded the Eagles, 45-35 with 15 offensive rebounds leading to 12 second chance points.

The Broncos matched a season-high with 20 assists as Flowers and Dugan each had five. WMU hurt themselves committing 21 turnovers with EMU scoring 29 points off of Brown & Gold turnovers.

With the loss WMU drops its overall record to 8-19, 2-12 in Mid-American Conference play. The Broncos continue MAC West play on the road with a match-up at Northern Illinois on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

The Broncos scored the first four points of the first half to take an early lead before EMU rallied back with five straight points to regain a one-point lead at the 15-minute mark. Two minutes later WMU got five straight points from Michael Flowers to propel back out to a 13-10 lead.

Midway through the first half the Broncos and Eagles were knotted up at 18-18 as WMU made three of four field goals. WMU jumped out to its largest lead of six at the 6:40 mark of the first half after embarking on a 5-0 run highlighted by Boyer-Richard knocking down a corner three-pointer to give WMU a 26-20 lead.

To end the first half, WMU made just one of its final five field goals but held a 34-33 lead heading into the locker room. During the first 20 minutes of play the Broncos shot 46.2 percent from the field with six three-pointers.

WMU once again held a six-point lead through the first five minutes of play in the second half after a Boyer-Richard corner three followed by a put back lay-up from Davis. Three minutes later EMU cut the lead down to four as the Eagles forced the Broncos to commit turnovers on back-to-back possessions.

A transition three from EMU tied the game up at 46-46 with 10 minutes remaining as the Eagles made four of five from the field over a three-minute stretch. During the stretch, the Broncos were held scoreless.

The two teams jostled back and forth during the final 10 minutes of play as neither team led by more than three. Trailing 61-60 with 1:24 left, Flowers shot a floater in the paint that came up short but was tipped in by Dugan to give WMU a one-point advantage with 56 seconds to play.

After an EMU turnover, Flowers on the next possession got off a three-pointer from the top of the key that resulted in a long rebound off the rim. EMU corralled the rebound and raced down court prior Flowers taking a charge and drawing the offensive foul.

WMU led by two with 12 seconds to play after Josh Davis was fouled and made the back end of his two free-throws. EMU's Paul Jackson cruised down the court and got to the rim with 10 seconds left and converted to tie the game at 63-63. Flowers got off a shot at the end of regulation that bounced off the left side of the rim.

In the overtime session, EMU's Paul Jackson took over scoring eight of the team's 14 points in the extra session. Jackson knocked down a fade away jumper from the right side to propel EMU to a 74-66 lead with 1:08 to play.

WMU was able to rally back down the stretch, seizing momentum of off missed EMU free-throws. During the final minute of play the Eagles were 3-of-10 from the free-throw. Trailing by four with seven seconds left, junior Jared Printy knocked down a three-pointer with zeros on the clock as the WMU rally fell short.

With the win, EMU improves to 13-14 on the season and 6-7 in conference play. EMU had four score in double figures with Paul Jackson leading the way with 18 points.
