MUNCIE, Ind. – The Western Michigan track and field team won the Ball State Tune-Up meet, defeating the host Cardinals, Wright State and Marian College on Friday night.
The Broncos won eight events on the night, including every field event, except the pole vault.
"The throwers always seem to do well down here and that trend continued today," said head coach Kelly Lycan.
Sophomore Abena Atuobi got the Broncos off to a hot start with a win in the shot put. Atuobi threw her second-best distance of the season at 48' 1.25" (14.66m). Freshman Madison Ochs took third to score for WMU, throwing a distance of 42' 8.25". Aniya Davis had a personal-best performance in the weight throw, claiming first place with a distance of 56' 10.25" (17.33m). Fellow classmate Taylor Eaton took second with a distance of 54' 6.75" (16.63m).
Junior Erica Sheahan won both the long jump and the triple jump. In the long jump she continued her consistency in reaching the high 18's, jumping 18' 8" (5.69m). In the triple jump she reached 36' 7" (11.15m). Junior Erica DePierre won the high jump, reaching her season-best of 5'5 (1.65m).
In the short sprints, junior Madison Meredith won both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. In the 60 she ran a season-best time of 7.60 seconds and in the 200 she ran a time of 25.07. Freshman Taneidra Cain took third in the 200 after running a time of 25.68 seconds.
Junior Alex Bryant had an indoor personal-best time of 58.37 seconds to take second in the 400-meter dash. Jasmine McLemore finished just behind her with a time of 1:00.95 to take third place.
Freshman Cheryl White scored in the 800-meter run after taking second with a time of 2:22.47. WMU took second and third in the 60-meter hurdles, with freshman Taylor Rucker running a time of 9.02 seconds and Diana Holsey finishing just behind her at 9.07.
The Broncos also took first place the 4x400-meter relay, combining for a time of 3:59.20.
Some of the team is back in action on Saturday at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational.
